    Wagner ... Pointless and Dull?

played this morning on Breakfast and did me head in .... bits of this and bits of that ... jumpy shouty and trickster quick .... but just incoherent ... and boring it all sounded false just an ephemeral show off and if i was in a real Viennese mood of disapproval i'd have said a piece of phallic-narcissistic totemism ... and then i heard it was Wagner ... my word what have i come to!

Chill out, Calum, it was early Wagner. We've all done things we regret in retrospect.

But I totally agree it is rubbish and did not warrant an airing. But rubbish is the order of the day on "Breakfast."

I think it is a fresh piece.
Wagner wasn't even 22 as he finished it in 1835 .

The perfect piece for Jarvi and the RSNO.

Back to the original topic. This overture is a very early piece of Wagner where he unwittingly or wittingly sounds like Rossini (or even at times like Mendelssohn) with lots of joky percussion effects. Great romp of a performance from Franz Konwitschny. He was a much underrated conductor: shame his son is such a lousy opera director.
