Rob, with his wide experience, is probably the best at it, or can be. I’m not sure what’s been happening of late, as I gave up listening to Breakfast (and usually the rest of the morning’s programmes) some time ago. A pity, after a lifetime of R3 and its predecessors being the only channel ever heard in the household, but I’m not bitter about it. It takes all tastes, and I have enough unheard CDs to keep me going.
I'm (sort of) in the same position as you re Breakfast. Not bitter, just don't listen.

A personal view: I would much prefer another hour to be given over weekly to such jazz classics as these where, contrasting with Alyn's JL, there would be minimal background information - just the music. How about a weekday, 6pm-7pm? The quid pro quo would be no jazz (or - part of the deal - any other irritations ) on Breakfast, and I can't believe that jazz fans wouldn't prefer that?? (I don't 'do' jazz, and I would!)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

      Ha !

Thanks Don, I'm actually from Newcastle, Staffs, and when in need of sympathy I tell people I'm from Stoke on Trent. But I do enter divine Cornwall every couple of weeks and the bulk of our disposable stuff is deliberately spent there. Just checking the A30 conditions as we speak - I don't think James Wonnacott would appreciate a late knock at the door by some stranded travellers with their dog and guinea pigs ...

Yes, those worldly presenters stray far and wide, in time too.
Not as much as I would like I suppose as I'm a rather against the 'tyranny of the new releases' which push their way in more than is sometimes deserved ( imo ! )

      >>>>I would like them to come to the notice of a wider audience

      Join the club !!

Well I think R3 punches it's weight in many areas. The complete and utter failure of the bbc is by those appalling people who control Rs 1, 2 & 6.
That's not a crazed opinion, it's an all too sad fact. Their careers come way above listener enrichment. But there's as much chance of changing those blinkered sods as finding a honest cabinet minister.

Now I'm delighted you've discovered the magic of youtube. There's another incredible place too - you must join - and that's Spotify - it really can be free!!! Loads of Charlie Poole on - it just took me five seconds to select Baltimore Fire ( gulp ) - I wonder if Spotify's 8 million songs at your fingertips has The Tamlins gorgeous version of ' Baltimore ' ? Quick check and it does !!!!!!!!!

Charlie Poole was also on our worldy chat box recently - I can't disagree with your opinion.

      Time for a wrap ...

          John,

Just caught up with this over late breakfast - what a great start to the day! Many thanks. Real thing indeed. (As I implied before, it all went downhill a few years after this .)

Now look. You've even made me use one of those face things.

Hey Don glad you enjoyed that.

Wonder if Rob Cowans has ever explored early BRITISH jazz, like,

Then there's Spike Hughes, a big fan of the Duke,

The Mouchi-Spike Hughes and His Orchestra-1930. The model in the pictures is me.

With the greatest respect John, I don't think the word " explore " is appropriate when linked to jazz tunes on dear
              old R3's 'Breakfast' !

But I wouldn't mind being proven wrong

( exploring can be dangerous ... eeeek !)

... i would gladly trade the odd bit of jazz on breakfast, which in jazz terms is often an empty gesture, for R3 not messing with the programmes on Saturdays because of the warbling metros etc ..... and if they could move Jon3 back to Friday night i would be in very heaven ...

.... if they want a broader palette, or a more experimental selections for breakfast, how about the long list of the unplayed ..... Swedish, Central European, South American baroque and early classical works; acres of British works that scarce see the light of day [i am sure there will other suggestions!]

                  Calum,

They could have a " Hey, we've never played that before, week "

There is a lot by the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Big Band that might work on Breakfast, e.g. the album Consummation.

Teddy Wilson was quite popular when Rob played his stuff a year or two ago - which leads me to suggest Bill Evans - although I can't explain why.

I found the juxtaposition this morning of 'As Time Goes By' - which I might cheerfully listen to in another context - with Brahms and Mussorgsgsky jarring and almost offensive. I sent a text to Breakfast immediately asking them not to do this. Having said that, I could tolerate Jazz and other non-classical items on Breakfast more easily if the surrounding works fitted with the Jazz better.

Forty-six years ago I made a tape including Thelonius Monk, Gabrielli, Vivaldi and others I've now forgotten. At that time, and at my then age, it worked well.

The mix takes care, but can work.

Oh yes, eightobstruction! I have this in my LP collection and also made a point of visiting the San Francisco cathedral many years ago just to see where this glorious track was recorded.
Hauntingly beautiful and worthy of inclusion on Breakfast - and in my opinion far superior to the Jan Gabarek/Hilliard material.
