Vieuxtemps, Kisielewski, de Fesch etc - not the standard daytime output by any means!
Does anyone have any thoughts on Kisielewski? There's not a lot on Spotify!

....on second thoughts, having now read a short biography, I will give others priority!

Good morning Lat, I too have read a short biography on Kisielewski and he has gone up my 'priority of interest' list!

Are we allowing politics to interfere with our music?

Good morning Beef Oven - and thank you for your comments. I couldn't quite decide on his politics - half good, half bad or possibly mainly good. As no one had responded, and the biography suggested that he had been a significant figure not only in music, I got cold feet. I just wondered whether he was someone so famous that I would have been expected to know him or that he had been involved in something very unpleasant that everyone knew about except me.

I suppose there is a wider issue about music and politics etc. Having had the discussion about Wagner and Chopin, I have since discovered that Liszt was also anti-semitic. I then started to read about John Ireland and there were some Britten style connotations there, albeit unproven. Sometimes I wish that we didn't have so much knowledge of these people as it leads to dilemmas if their music is enjoyable. Maybe I should just stick with the music!

I warmed to him; a Jewish, libertarian fighter against the Polish tyrannical state of the time. Erudite in literature and philosophy and coiner of at least two wonderful phrases/statements regarding that tyranny - 'dictatorship of dunces' and 'socialism heroically overcomes difficulties unknown in any other system'.

I take your point about 'too much knowledge', but perhaps it's about what we do with that knowledge, rather than the knowledge itself.

Ever since I can remember, I have been aware of Chopin's, Liszt's and Wagner's anti-semitism - even before I was familiar with their music, but it never resulted in any blocks for me. I suppose I just stick with the music!

Yes, good points. As I have said before on anti-semitism, it is important to be aware that all things in the past would have seemed different. I am not excusing it but I get the impression that there was some naivety and that does provide some leeway. Anyhow, as you rightly say, that's not an issue with Kisielewski so the absence of comment could indicate that many don't know his music.

Thank you. Interesting - and described on one website as 'mysterious'. I thought that there was a harp like effect in places.

I wonder what the "NB" in the programme listing of tonight's TTN signifies....?

                        2:31 AM
Bach, Johann Sebastian (1685-1750) NB use with discretion jlts Nov2000!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                            Mozetich, Marjan (b. 1948)
Affairs of the Heart: a Concerto for Violin & String Orchestra (1997)
Juliette Kang (violin), CBC Vancouver Orchestra, Mario Bernardi (conductor)

I heard this broadcast for the second time this morning and found it strangely beguiling. At first - half recognising it, but unsure - wondered if it was Arvo Paaert or Steve Reich.

Anybody hear it, have views, know about Mozetich...?

I wondered about that as well.
The Norwegian version of Through the Night, "Notturno ", has more detail about the broadcasts than the recent R3 webpages (I have complained about this several times) or Euorclassic Notturno (http://www3.ebu.ch/cms/en/sites/ebu/...playlists.html).

                              Have a look at: http://www.nrk.no/spillelister/spill...013%2000:05:00
It says it was "Recorded At Trefoldighetskirken During Oslo Chamber Music Festival 15/8/99" and gives this extra info "Cantata No.36c (Bwv.36c) 'Schwingt Freudig Euch Empor' (1.Schwingt Freudig 2.Ein Herz 3.Die Liebe Fuhrt 4.Du Bist Es Ja 5.Der Tag 6.Nur Dieses Einz'Ge 7.Auch Mit 8.Bei Solchen 9.Wie Die Jahre)".

                              Maybe it's a rights issue?

Mozetich is IMO a gifted and well trained composer without an own face. Including his Jewish background he presents -as he wishes- Jewish (or Klezmer) influenced music, Mahler ditto, Reich, Pärt or Debussy. It's sounds all beguiling, but lacks an own voice.
Quite a lot of his music is broadcast in TtN, and is taken from and available on the Canadian CBC label (Mozetich is IIRC a Canadian), and all orchestral works are performed involving Mario Bernardi.
