    23 December
Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 2 in C minor ('Resurrection')
Singer: Zhengrong Cul. Singer: Jie Yang. Choir: China Opera and Dance Drama Chorus. Orchestra: Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. Conductor: Long Yu.

I heard just the last 20 minutes of this, without knowing the artists: the sound (on my little bedside radio) was rather extraordinary (strong brass sounds, double timpani?).... Worth a listen. A mezzo with very wobbly vibrato not at all to my liking but it sounded to be an exciting performance.

        05:48 AM - 8 January
        Ludwig Schuncke (1810-1834)
Grande Sonata for piano in G minor (dedicated to Robert Schumann), Op 3
        Sylviane Deferne (piano)

'I would rather have Schunke than all the rest of my friends' - or words to that effect from Robert Schumann, quoted by Jonathan in his announcement. I found it an interesting work from someone quite unknown to me. He died aged 24.

I've just discovered "Through The Night"-well, I knew it was transmitted, but never gave it a thought. That is, until I downloaded the Sounds App on my i-phone. Now I have a full 6 hours of music to listen to, sans advertisements much in the style of what I can just about remember the third programme being. I spend a goodly amount of time driving all over the place and find listening to this programme played through the car's hi-fi is fantastic!

Have you yet discovered get_iplayer, Andrew? It's fully compatible with 'Sounds', you just have to specify that the source is radio. Remember, you are supposed to delete any programmes downloaded 30 days after they are posted to 'Sounds'. You will get a reminder from get_iplayer to this effect. How this ties in with the extended availability of many on demand BBC progrmmes, I do not know.

I liked this performance, and I have been seeking a version to suit my preferences for some time.
It was unforced, not wallowy, passionate without anger - all prerequisites for Ravel's captivating mixture of sadness and exuberance to shine through.

Many of the more famous trios are brilliant on the "Pantoum" (3rd movement), but too deliberate elsewhere, so the music becomes somewhat one-dimensional.

I have not listened yet. How did this arrangement for cello and two violins (no piano) work out?

Antoine Pichon (violin) decided to play the piano instead. He is a pianist.

Data should, perhaps, not be wasted ..... so what about a little quiz ... ???

Below are the Top Ten composers, in terms of number of pieces played, on Essential Classics in 2019

The pieces played for these 10 amounted to 25.5% of the total music time on EC and the average time of all pieces played was 6 mins and 26 secs.

Would anyone, not be too bored with all this, like to guess for TTN

                      1) if the Top Ten composers were the same

                      2) what % of the total TTN playing time this Top Ten represented

                      3) what the average time per piece played on TTN was ....

Yes and from now on I will try to get a life ......

                      Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
                      Franz Schubert
                      Johann Sebastian Bach
                      Ludwig van Beethoven
                      George Frideric Handel
                      Joseph Haydn
                      Antonín Dvořák
                      Claude Debussy
                      Frédéric Chopin
                      Johannes Brahms

                        1) No
                        2) Smaller than 25.5%
                        3) Longer than 6'26"

Do I win a big prize?

Too early to say - there is a very slim chance there may be another contestant .......

                              1) No (say, 7 duplicates)
                              2) 13%
                              3) 23'

What about the stats for the R3 evening concert (or for the Proms)? Quite interesting to compare and contrast.
