In January this year we had La Monte Young's The Well Tuned Piano Through the Night. Next Sunday morning it's a live performance of Morton Fledman's 2nd String Quartet from the Tate Modern Tanks. The performers are the FLUX Quartet. We have a thread about it:

Previous performances of the work by the FLUX Quartet have lasted over 6 hours, as does their Mode recording of the work.

Nielsen, Carl (1865-1931), arr. Abrahamsen tonight in a concert which includes the Sinfonia Semplice, though it's not that which Abrahamsen has arranged this time. It's the organ work Commotio. Looking forward to catching it via the iPlayer in about 9 hours time.

Bryn, you have something to look forward to. In my opinion, of course!

International Women's Day: Wednesday 7 March

For International Women's Day, Catriona Young presents a programme of music solely by women composers.

This is the third year (I think) that the TTN team compiled a six-hour recorded live concerts of music by women composers. It may be seen as tokenism* but I think there are a lot more works by women composers on Radio 3 now than there were three years ago.

              Thursday 28 September

              1:46 AM
              Mompou, Federico [1893-1987]
              Pour pénétrer les âmes
              Sira Hernández (piano)
              1:50 AM
John Shea presents a recital of music by Salvador Brotons & Federico Mompou from Barcelona

A brave pianist to perform this at a concert (I assume this was) but I think it will make an interesting late night prom.

... and preceded by Mompou's hour-long piano cycle Musica callada from 12:41, too! Very interesting repertoire - thanks for flagging it up, dovers

Oops. Yes, I did mean this. Thank you.

Fascinating stuff, dovers! Mompou I always think of as a sort of Spanish Satie, but in typically timely fashion I now see that he was Catalunian by birth!

                      It's Elgar 2 week on TTN ....

In the early hours of Tuesday, the 2015 Proms performance:

                      1:15 AM
                      Elgar, Edward (1857-1934)
Symphony No 2 in E flat major, Op 63
The Hallé, Sir Mark Elder (conductor)

                      Coming up tonight:

                      1:05 AM
                      Elgar, Edward [1857-1934]
Symphony No 2 in E flat major, Op 63
Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Nikolaj Znaider (conductor)

And - very interestingly, I thought (I've downloaded it for repeated listening), this 1992 archive performance in the early hours of last Friday:

                      2:44 AM
                      Elgar, Edward [1857-1934]
Symphony No 2 in E flat major, Op 63
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Andre Previn (conductor)

A more punchy, brassy performance than I'm used to, but not without great sensitivity when called for. I liked it at first hearing!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Good to hear Rach's 2nd Symphony from the 2015 Proms early this morning.

However, anyone tuning in five minutes before the start of the programme might have been surprised to be listening to "Are Friends Electric?" by Tubeway Army.

                          Hiya Lat-Literal,

                          What! You jest, surely?

In the unlikely event that you are not joking, please explain how that was thought suitable.

Not unlikely Late Junction material, I'd have thought (not that I know the piece L-L mentioned!)

All of Suzanne Ciani's 'mixtape' selections are worth checking out.
