There was an engrossing programme on BBC4 last night about trams, repeated Wednesday. That's the sort of thing I fear will disappear from there: the unexpected and the quirky, social/cultural history, et al.

I do not really have a problem with Radio 3 once Composer of the Week starts - the rest of its utputs strikes me as maintaining its high quality -look at today for example .

Absolutely. Until 12 noon Radio 3 is a complete and utter waste of time. I have written and actually got a reply which said, in effect, that research had shown that there were people out there who would appreciate Radio 3 if it were more welcoming. No allowance for the fact that one man's welcome is another's "good God, what's this rubbish?". I also thought that, if I were put off by some perception of intellectual loftiness on Radio 3, then being invited to link three snatches of previously unheard music by, say, year or place would be very off-putting. Essentially, intellectual content - none, knowledge of little known and less cared about facts - everything.

I'll put me coat on before the cabernet really kicks in and save my bile for my reply to the `BBC.

I've just been reading a radio review by a certain radio critic who complains about two presenters on Absolute Radio. Their names are apparently Russ and Nick. Of them:

"It's also as if they've lost all personality. [Nick] Jackson says so little around clumps of songs and adverts that it was quite a shock when he momentarily interacted with a caller who's got a leak in his roof... It's a shame to underuse a presenter so ..."

Our critic concludes her piece with:

"It's good to vary the playlist [this refers to the policy of 'No Repeats' of the same track], but not at the expense of what knits successful music radio together: interactive content, banter, passion and laughs."

It's different strokes for different folks - that might be fine & just what's wanted on something called Absolute Radio (anything to do with the vodka brand?) which I assume is a pop station, but absolutely not what's wanted for something like radio 3.

I think the distinction is between popular radio stations and those where the music is taken seriously - whatever genre it may be. When The Lad was imposed on 6 Music in order to bring in more female listeners, there were complaints about his inane 'banter' (polite word) and the reduction in the amount of music played.

What particularly took my breath away in the crit was the suggestion that a varied playlist should not be at the expense of the jolly presenter input. The woman clearly doesn't have a lot of interest in music.
