Did anyone hear the return of the Best of British Heffer?

yes I listened. I don't know how Foulds is regarded round here but it's a soundworld I find very attractive. Apart from Jerusalem and the Boyce I think every item was unfamiliar to me.

A slight quibble with the programme, Mr Heffer has obviously been told to tell us the names of all the callers to Breakfast who suggested an item, by way of introduction to each piece he plays - I can't see the point of doing this.

Indeed mercs I have to agree.....hence my oblique reference to our own teamsaint who may, or may not have been one of the names mentioned. But like you a lot of pieces new to me........

I think this is what makes one cynical about the whole exercise. No harm in consulting the BoB playlist to see what "people" had suggested, and perhaps stimulate the (knowledgeable) presenter's thoughts along similar lines. Somewhere, there's a little marketing handbook that explains why this is so useful to those with something to sell ...

Even car manufacturers are slightly ahead of the game, with variable levels for engine speed which are user selectable.

What - as the car gets faster the radio volume increases? I find sometimes that it's the other way round - as the volume, or tempo, of the music increases the car goes faster.

I don't think AVC works with engine speed or the volume would jump every time you changed gear. More likely car speed, though I thought most systems have a microphone to measure background ambient noise inside the car and adjust to compensate for that?

Yes, it's worrying isn't it. Presumably you can still change stations, or even switch the radio off in modern cars? Or, do you get a computerised voice giving you messages along the lines of "Are you sure you want to do that Dave" or "I wouldn't listen to that if I was you Dave", before delivering a lethal shock through the drivers seat.

But how nice if it could automatically lower the volume to a whisper when the interminable R3 trails come on (or even detect a tweet coming on and do likewise). That's what I'd call a 'smart' radio.

it was the Three Mantras played on Saturday Classics that I enjoyed. I don't know whether his compositional style underwent a complete transformation, or whether he was able to compose in two different styles simultaneously, but the Keltic Suite, just played on Breakfast, is not nearly as interesting as Three Mantras in my view.

Agree Mercs and I thought New Heffer 3 quite good last weekend ........In Terra Pax of course.....
