Thank you, BoD. Is that SH the right-wing journalist? (I think he writes in the papers which need delivering in a plain wrapper - at least in this area.)

I suppose if Petroc Trelawney can appear on television as a newspaper reviewer we can expect the reverse to happen too. To my mind, PT is slightly better talking about current affairs than he is when talking about music.

I don't know if anyone listened to Breakfast on Thursday or if they did managed to hang on through Zadok for the much loved "Your Call".
The caller was a man who had become a friend of Gordon Jacob after writing him a letter saying how much he loved the Trombone Concerto and his other works. The first movement of the Concerto was then played. So that makes 2 outings in 2012 already!! - it must be roaring up Suffolk's spreadsheet.
Seriously it will be interesting, to me at least, to see if the "Heffer effect" has increased the amount of 20th century British Music played.

I happened to catch that too, anton. Agreed, it was interesting (even though I don't like the concerto... and I'm a trombonist).

Unlike the thing this morning: the words 'Chorus of the Hebrew Sla...' were interrupted by the click of my off switch
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Just listening to the first of Robert Winston's 2 programmes about Franz Sch****t from a couple of Saturdays ago (I recorded it).

Did anyone listen and think that the Prof Sir sounded to have had rather too much schnapps before the broadcast?

Sheveral mishtakesh and the general je ne shais quoi of a man who's had a good lunch and not entirely (or even mainly) a solid lunch.

No posts here since 18th April! Does that mean no-one listens to this programme or is it so boring it's hardly worth posting about? Quite frankly, the last few weeks have just been aural wallpaper, and Ms. Stott, presenting is dull, the music is dull (oh, we have L'apres du midi soon it seems) Bring back Simon Heffner or roll on Craig Revel Horwood for the afternoon slot asap!!!! Or, bring JRR forward!

              Second that last proposal, Anna!

BTW is Simon Heffner related to Hugh?

Saturday Classics today is a bit better. Music by women composers: Hildegard of Bingen, Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn, Nadia Boulanger, Germaine Tailleferre, Elizabeth Maconchy, Amy Beach, Louise Farre etc.

At least it's a theme and not your twenty best tunes and nice to hear some Ethel Smyth and Grace Williams for a change.

Just discovered Ruth Gipps - a name I had never encountered before - on Youtube. British composer of the 20th century who was seriously overlooked because of her sex (according to the biographies I have read). I see there is a 2nd Symphony on CD and wondered if anyone had come across it. At present its not cheap enough to take a punt but any positive feedback here might push me to fork out the £19...

Apropos of nothing but the Twenty Best Tunes thread.
Switched on this morning. Martin Handley introducing BOLEROOOOOOOOO. Oooooh Noooooo. Switched Off.
Switched on again; James Jolley introducing VW's Thomas Tallis.....Switched Off.
Give it one more go, switched on: Arnold's Four Scottish Dances. Off it goes.

                  back to Youtube.

It's part of the Great British Symphonic Collection, if you don't mind the lack of information as it doesn't contain linernotes whatsoever

The accompanying piece (on both the single" as well as the boxed CD) is Arthur Butterworth's 1st symphony, which is another very enjoyable piece worth to be heard more.

Anna: Amazon.co.uk. Listed as £9.98 plus £1.26 postage - but it was the last one left at that price from that seller (from Germany).

I would suggest more than a bit better, in my view a really interesting programme that brought a lot of new names to me. Well presented with a lot of nice extra information - I am sure salymap will have posted the Dame Ethyl toothbrush story before but it is wonderful........
