    Yes, I'll second that!

Being a great devotee of British music, and in the hope of hearing some lesser known, as well as different performances of better known, works, I shall give Simon Heffer's Saturday afternoon spell a chance.

Well, it sounds as if it may be a good programme. I've never heard the Colour Symphony so I'll be listening.

The programme features Arthur Bliss' complete "Colour Symphony" as well as choral music by Peter Warlock, orchestral works by Stanford, EJ Moeran and Cyril Scott, a short piano sonata by Ethel Smyth, some Vaughan Williams songs, and it ends with Malcolm Arnold's lively brass quintet.

Well you're in for a real treat if the Colour Symphony recording is a good performance, Anna. The scherzo movement has a fantastic feeling of elation and follow-though. The only problem I have with this work is the overuse of timpani as the last movement's fugue reaches its climax - Bliss was it to be young in 1921, 2 years back from the trenches, tea dances at the Trocadero, all those flappers in cloche hats, and the country house parties, and I think Bliss got a bit carried away at that point!

Yes I really like the look of the programme, and am recording it for morning use during the week...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Its been excellent so far - I evene enjoyed the songs which are not my favourite art form (though they were by RVW) Colour Symphony just ended conducted by the composer and it sounded excellent to my ears

I'm afraid it's been a bit too heavy on the songs for my taste (they are just not my thing at all), the Stanford Villiers ditties were alright but the RVW ones were downright dreary (to my ears). However, I am glad I heard the Bliss for the first time (it was the LSO) and a rather nice peaceful piano piece by Ethel Symth after the hurly-burly of that symphony! Simon Heffner's a good presenter, informative and no idle chat or 'can you guess what this is?' nonsense. And I really liked the Morean.
Edit: Having said that about the songs, I think the Peter Warlock by the Finzi Singers is wonderful!

I really enjoyed the choice of music, and was especially impressed by the Bliss (both the work and the performance). By-the-by, did anybody else hear SH's series of talks, in 'The Essay' slot, on British war films of the 1950s?

I just managed to catch part one of the Heffer "show" on iplayer and loved it, almost all of it was new to me and a lot, IMHO, of good stuff - even some Dame E for salymap!

Agreed! It is on the SD card in my DAB radio and each time live R3 makes me I flick over and grab some English. I intend to do likewise with his forthcoming Saturday "shows" (if I may borrow your inverted commas )

Fools seldom differ..........a legal (sort of) question ....my daughter gave me some software which has downloaded the "show" onto our PC and into ITunes and it now sits on this iPad - am I in breach of something?

Yes. However, if it was an mp2 saved from the live digital broadcast, then no. Confused? It would hardly be surprising if you were. As I understand from previous discussions here and on the old BBC boards, the Beeb has negotiated rights wavers where broadcasts are concerned, but not where 'narrowcast' individual downloads from the iPlayer are concerned. Simples, eh?

Yes... and does it work for Apple Macs? And if so can I have the name, please?

I'm sure there is software out there to do the dirty dead on a Mac. iPods, however, do not like mp2s. That's why I use a cheap and cheerful Arnova 7 G2 which handles a very wide range of codecs with ease, though it does have problems with Flash video files (FLV), but they are easy enough to convert to m4v.
