Being a great devotee of British music, and in the hope of hearing some lesser known, as well as different performances of better known, works, I shall give Simon Heffer's Saturday afternoon spell a chance.

The programme features Arthur Bliss' complete "Colour Symphony" as well as choral music by Peter Warlock, orchestral works by Stanford, EJ Moeran and Cyril Scott, a short piano sonata by Ethel Smyth, some Vaughan Williams songs, and it ends with Malcolm Arnold's lively brass quintet.

Its been excellent so far - I evene enjoyed the songs which are not my favourite art form (though they were by RVW) Colour Symphony just ended conducted by the composer and it sounded excellent to my ears

I'm afraid it's been a bit too heavy on the songs for my taste (they are just not my thing at all), the Stanford Villiers ditties were alright but the RVW ones were downright dreary (to my ears). However, I am glad I heard the Bliss for the first time (it was the LSO) and a rather nice peaceful piano piece by Ethel Symth after the hurly-burly of that symphony! Simon Heffner's a good presenter, informative and no idle chat or 'can you guess what this is?' nonsense. And I really liked the Morean.
Edit: Having said that about the songs, I think the Peter Warlock by the Finzi Singers is wonderful!

I really enjoyed the choice of music, and was especially impressed by the Bliss (both the work and the performance). By-the-by, did anybody else hear SH's series of talks, in 'The Essay' slot, on British war films of the 1950s?
