    Playlists

    Hi!

Is there anyone else who would find playlists in advance, rather than in arrear useful?

    The information at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00wbnxb seems
rather sparse - or have I missed something?

    Regards

    David

I remember the days when Radio Times had a fully itemised list of everything that played from 07.00 until 09.00. Even items that were very short got mentioned.

      Changed days...

But in those days, radio was given 3 pages in Radio Times (or two and a half, to be precise). And there were only 3 channels to accomodate: the Home Service, the Light Programme and the Music Programme/Test Match Special/Third Programme. Now the magazine promotes all the commercial stations - and Alison Graham. Radio is shoved to the back with as few pages as possible.

I bet the other commercial TV stations pay RT to promote them. The Beeb is hardly likely to accept money from itself. I say this in all innocence having never bought the Radio Times in 20 years. Is it still part of the BBC? It does not look like the other BBC magazines.

As we speak it is still part of the BBC magazines section of BBC Worldwide (the commercial arm of the BBC). But not necessarily for ever...

The RT editor has a fair amount of say as to how much detail appears because when there were complaints about the cut in the TTN details, the full listing was restored. (But we're not fooled: it was cut down first to make room for theJazz and Planet Rock on the same page. Shortly after, theJazz was axed, ergo it was convenient to restore the TTN listings).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

On the old BBC boards I complained a couple of times about inadequate details. I can understand that the full schedule might not be easily available in advance for such programmes as Breakfast and Afternoon on 3, where there is often room to slip extra items in, but I can see no excuse for not updating the details after the programme finishes. I cannot be the only listener, surely, who has looked at the schedule to find out what an item was or who performed it and found nothing.

An increasingly common irritation these days is for the BBC to introduce a programme with gushing guff and to leave the details of the music unclear. 'Jolyonne Hevywether will play both soothing and arousing music in a programme containing Brahms, Schubert and John Cage.'

If there must be surprises and new recordings, what about two hours of detailed programme [in RT in advance] and one hour for the rest? We would then stand less chance of missing a favourite work. Much as I like Rob and Sara it's impossible to listen properly all the time between 7am and 10 am. There are things to be done!

I agree that having the playlists in advance or even before the program would be great. And moaned about this before on the old boards. However, today I would commend R3 that on monday I emailed asking for information on Gabriella Montero's recording and had the following reply back very quickly:
Thanks for your email - please find below details of the Gabriela Montero recording we played this morning. I'm sorry about the lack of information on the website - because of staffing over the holiday period the playlists for this week probably won't be updated on the website until 4th January.

I've only had this happen once before and of course it was from Rob C. But I think for now we must take the good with the bad.

The more I think about it, the more certain I am that 4 pages of radio listings per day in the Radio Times would be the best way forward. It would benefit all radio channels, not just our favourite.

I'm not enjoying the fact that I have to trawl through several Breakfast 'shows' in order to have my R3 survey ready fo next week. Breakfast is as irritating as ever, another 'Jupiter' from the Planets, Tchaikovsky arranged for 4 mandolins (ghastly) endless advertising of the 12 days of Mozart and 'tasters' of Mozart to wet our appetites. I know some of you like Breakfast but I think it is fast become a terrible programme.
