"Mournful", no, I don't respond in that way.
"Second Rate" - yes, for Sibelius. (But then his "second rate" is better than many other composers' best efforts.)
"Over-broadcast" - as I don't bother with R3 before noon these days, I haven't noticed this. The last time I listened to it was just under a year ago (10th Seot, 2017) and a couple of times in February before that (the composer's own recording) - having not heard the piece in years before that. If it is getting the Lark Ascending treatment, then it's further evidence that my "boycott" is a very good idea.
As an am listener I haven’t heard a lark ascending or everyone’s favourite colour of rhapsody for ages .... should I complain .... ????

Today’s ‘Playlist Starter’ is Elgar’s Falstaff. Preceded by Ian Skelly saying ‘well we can’t play it all cos it’s quite long’.
I just thought you might enjoy that.
Like the old days on BBC radio when Tony Blackburn said the other day that he was restricted at one time to singles lasting around two and a half minutes. Maybe R3 think that Rossini overtures are a bit to long too!

It got worse (I was listening in the car) - the chosen piece was the "last part" [sic] of Strauss's Don Quixote. If anything needs to be played whole or not at all.....
He played a Chicago SO/Barenboim recording. I have an earlier one, the very fine Reiner version with Janigro.

Next they'll be splicing the beginning of Falstaff to the end of Don Quixote, in the manner of a 'cut and shut' car. A Quixstaff, or a Falsote (or Falsequote).
I love Tony Backburn late night show on R2 that I listen to on Catch Up!
I remember when he was on R2 on Saturday mornings - I would turn to him with relief if there was a particularly annoying reviewer on CD Review (as it then was).

He did tell us that they were all lovable rogues, along with Till (which we were spared ) - not sure that DQ is a rogue, if he was including him......
