Perhaps it was a subliminal Police message!

Hmm - I wonder what lessons the Breakfast/Essential Classics producers could draw from RB's comment that "It would have been easier to say, well here’s a person who’s not really into classical music, so let’s just give him lots of famous of pieces and lots of gentle pieces and he’ll quite enjoy it. But actually what they [ie listeners who suggested works] did was they covered a difficult range, I think, and there was stuff in there that I did like and that I didn’t like, and there was stuff in there that I only liked when I heard it for the second or third time … So as an introduction I don’t think it could have been better.”"

Shall we try for Chris Evans or Nick Grimshaw next? Looks like the famous and gentle pieces go down well.

Should add that I don't at all think that such experiments aren't worth doing (or aren't enjoyed by some/many Radio 3 listeners). Just that it's basically a gimmick where Radio 3 promotes itself across the various services in the hope of hooking more people who don't really 'know much about classical music' - good excuse to stick with the famous and gentle pieces that they'll enjoy.

Am I correctly informed that a tweet was read out this morning that JSB was 'dreary and samey'? Cometh the audience, goeth the knowledge?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Yes I got some of Mr Copeland this morning. If ever the heading to this thread "surely on the wrong station" was true, it was surely about this "guest spot"... I mean, I found Copeland an engaging guy, I like that LA attitude, and he reminded me specifically of Terry Gilliam... plus actually, cycling in the summery sunshine in the park to Desmond Dekker was not unpleasant, rather cool. But is it what I'd tuned into R3 for? NO! There are other radio stations for that. Do Radio 1 or Live365 http://www.live365.com/index.live#st...djhearticaltee etc play Telemann or Schumann sometimes? NO!

Oh but they do, they do. It's just that it's as recycled into pop tunes.

Unanswerable. That's the sort of post I long to see on the smugly self satisfied Radio 3 Facebook page!

Does anyone here post on it?

Personally I'd like to see a concerted attack on the R3 facebook page, if only to cause maximum embarrassment. It would be hard for the BBC hierarchy, or the media, to ignore if everyone on here posted intelligent, critical responses to their cultural vandalism.

So far, I see only one comment to the blog referred to in post #1004. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/radio3/posts/Bacons-Classics

Even kleines c (aka charlie) has given up stroking them. No idea who that blog commenter is but I gave the comment the

Actually, comparatively few listeners post on the Facebook page either, and when did we last see an adverse Twitter comment retweeted? A large proportion of the Facebook 'likers' appear to be based abroad, and most of those who are in the UK are the serial likers who 'Like' everything.

I heard Stuart Copeland on yesterday's programme and for someone I take as being a bright rock musician was very surprised that he seemed to intensely dislike Varese - the you can't like everything!

He had me laughing out loud, I confess! "Well that was a catchy tune! Is anybody still listening?"

I caught that snippet - turned on, realised it was Varese so stayed listening (thinking it was unusual for EC) and the following interview greatly amused me as well - can't remember verbatim but along the lines of "Well, whoever the composer is - he's having a laugh at our expense isn't he?"

In that case I am definitely lacking in the sense of humour department.

Copeland's Percussion Concerto will be part of next Sunday's evening concert, sandwiched between Alassio and Prokofiev 6.
