I was at the Proms performance of the complete Ma Vlast, and I know it's heretical to say so, but Vltava and In Bohemia's Woods and Fields are by far the best things in the cycle. I'm sure it means a great deal if you are a Czech, but I did find it rather a long stand !

And good it was too, I thought the engineers brought out the harps nicely. Meanwhile I can plunder the shelves!

Long stand sounds like the apprentice's first day at work! Certainly the big tunes are in 2 and 4, but those harps at the start of 1 are wonderful!

And they do quote each other quite a lot, Ferret. I still get some of the rarely played movementsmixed up when I play my CD of them.

The beginning of the end of R2 was not Wogan's replacement, but some time before that when the same replacement replaced Johnny Walker on the drivetime slot. The music, the atmosphere, Johnny's laid-back, relaxed, chatty style was replaced by a loud, really quite nasty style, clearly designed to ship out the older audience and bring in those whose teenage years were the eighties. Since then the whole style of R2 has changed R1.5., eg Jo Whiley given the 8.00 - 9.30pm slot, with little music from before 1980 played. But then look at the pop-scene. Boy bands 5 guys plodding around on stage, none playing instruments, no real part-singing. Compare this with the sixties where eg The Hollies would play all their instruments and put in decent three-part harmony as well.

Here we go again. Mahler 8 BaL represented by a small chunk. ROGER IT IS A 3 HOUR PROGRAMME - give us the whole work!

the guest is in residence 10:30am - 11:00am, leaving one hour, not enough time for the whole of Mahler 8 (you've probably worked that out for yourself)

(what's it got to do with Roger?)

Easy solution, get rid of the guest slot (which is probably Roger's fault ).

Believe it or not Roger has a certain responsibility for running Radio 3! Thinking outside the box could put the guest spot earlier, or are the slots in the programme written on blocks of stone? Better still ditch the guest spot! What could be a great programme is a dog's late breakfast!

What I found odd was that, although RC began playing the Mahler 8 just after 11, he played part one and not part two, which I think comes in at under an hour in Abbado's version.

It would be no surprise as the target audience is probably the sort of people who have a panic attack if Countdown or Deal or No Deal is moved by five minutes on Channel 4
