I thought Heldenleben might be pushing the irony button but decided to play it safe!

No irony intended, but one never knows - do one?

This morning, in the car, I heard an elegant little concerto by Charles Avison. This reminded me that Radio 3 did a short series on this composer - presented by Stephanie Hughes. I think she also did the research for the series. Anyway, it was an outstanding presentation, using dramatisation and some dialogue to catch the flavour of the period, and with the enthusiasm bursting through in her quiet way. Anybody else remember? It was some years ago.

On April 27th 2001, Stephanie Hughes introduced a recreation of one of Avison's subscription concerts. Full details are available on the BBC Genome.

did any one spot that they were playing the wrong Lustspiel overture ? - not the one by Busoni as billed but by another composer whose name I didn't quite catch. I thought it didnt sound one bit like FB - very rhythmically repetiitive and with very four square harmony. I thought if he composed it overnight Im not surprised ( sorry Ferruccio)

Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek. Where is/was the Busoni billed?

Suzy K intro’d the Busoni with the anecdote of its rapid composition and then up popped the Von Reznicek - a composer of whom I have never heard . Mind you I’ve not heard the Busoni overture either....and still haven’t.

Ah, so just another example of SK not doing here homework with due diligence but just spouting her faux erudition instead. At least she corrected the error and apologised after the Reznicek ended. (I just listened via Sounds).

There were some strange 'noises off' during the handover this morning - as if someone had opened a door into the rest of the domestic set-up?

Switched over from R4 as Woman's Hour loomed to hear Suzy mispronounce the German "Libelle" (dragonfly) which is stressed on the ell not the lib. Nitpicking maybe but isn't it part of a Radio 3 presenter's job to check pronunciation of foreign words?

To be fair it’s more likely that the studio manager played in the wrong track possibly have been supplied with the wrong one by the producer . Who cares ? There’s an epidemic on - bless ‘em all I say..

Donna Diana (Overture in particular) by Reznicek is pretty well known, I think, although it doesn't turn up as frequently as it used to! Plenty of examples on Youtube.

Yes I googled him - and I’m pretty sure I’ve heard the overture a few times - it has a memorable name . He had an exceptionally long life and was at one stage pretty popular .

In fact he just got a name check for the most credible high note in the team singalong with a recent track . Clearly they are having fun...
A colleague of mine once played in four Wrong tracks on Round Midnight - a programme slightly handicapped by the pre transmission Pint

Tony was live on EC just now. It goes without saying that it was very good. .
                                There, I’ve said it .

And that probably concludes todays good news stories........
