It is told that in the '60s NASA spent a million dollars inventing a ball point pen that would write in space.

    The Russian astronauts used pencils.

Apparently the Canadians love this one.

The stupid names companies are coming up with these days! There's one called Booking.com which is advertised every other ad break on Channel 5 in the mornings: any hard-of-hearing English person living north of a line roughly between Worcester and Peterborough will hear that as something quite different!

I'm intrigued. How they pronounce it? Correctly, or the CB-H way?

                This is a Booking.com ad - go to 0.42

Your daughter's first match. Let's make it happen. Booking.com has millions of accommodations to choose from, covering more than 85,000 destinations in 220+ ...

I’m ‘Northern’ (Liverpool) and that’s how I pronounce it!

I really don't see what the problem is. It's correctly pronounced in standard English. Far better than the sickly CB-H "berking". [I'm northern (ex-Salford) too]

The diction is clear on that version of the ad. The one most frequently heard on Channel 5 in the mornings makes "booking" sound more like it starts with an F!

Yes, but why would northern citizens not understand that any more or less than the cockney brigade?

Same here (but then, I'm a higgorant Easterner). Is it something to do with Buckingham, perhaps?

                                But certainly "essential"!

What was it, ts? (And do I win a prize if I guess that it isn't SK presiding this week?)
