One has to ask: if he makes that many mistakes, however gracious his apologies, is he really the right man to be presenting on Radio 3?

"Depth" and "out of" are words that come to mind...

On R3 as it is now between 9 and 12 Mon to Fri - he’s ideal. I rarely listen but he’s ideal!

Couldn't agree more - I sometimes listen to the first half-hour or so while browsing various sites and dealing with email, and occasionally suggest 'follow-up' pieces - normally with tongue firmly in cheek. I think his aim is to come over as some sort of matey subversive, which is vastly preferable to being lectured.

That reminds me of one of the early criticisms of (as it was in them days) Morning on 3: too many pieces of non classical music. To which the BBC reply was that it was only reflecting the breadth of music which Radio 3 now covered. To which the response was: 'Yes, that's the other complaint!' And eventually the general amount of non-classical, and opportunities to play it, were cut (dedicated slots for musicals/film music, light music et al dropped).

No objection (here ) to people who are less musically informed, but production should still check that there are basic standards. As it is, one begins to lose confidence in production staff too …
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

IMVVHO the much hated format means that rather than having a fixed playlist we now have 1/2/3 pieces selected by the listeners plus a host of other suggestions and the presenter has to do their best to talk knowledgeably about them all. Hence Skellers slips up or owns up to a lack of knowledge on occasions ...... when he has prepared e.g. in his interviews of the Bostridges and Renders of the world I feel he performs very well and displays a considerable level of knowledge and understanding ..... but then I’m biased .......

              Biased, possibly, but not alone!

I've caught a couple of his interviews (by accident), and quite agree... But I find the programme so annoying despite IS's best efforts that I avoid it like the plague - I'm sorry IS has been saddled with it...

"Breakfast" is a much more satisfying programme when presented by someone decent i.e. Martin Handley
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

That’s just how elementary (school) it’s turning out to be....

I listen to ClassicFM in the morning. At least it has no presumptions.

(Actually, the above is a fib...I either listen to CDs or stream stuff. I start off with R3 with good intentions but as soon as I get exhorted to twit, email or txt to the puerile, pointless, pathetically poor playlist, I yell "STFU" to the radio and switch it off.)

A real corker from yesterday's listing:

                            Gustav Mahler

Symphony No 2 in C Minor "Resurrection" (3rd mvt)
Composer: Gilbert Kaplan. Composer: Renate Stark-Voit. Orchestra: Minnesota Orchestra. Conductor: Osmo Vänskä.

Mahler: Symphony No. 2 in C Minor "Resurrection". BIS. 3.

Anybody but SK. She may knowledgeable, but the supercilious nastiness makes me long for anyone else. Even Anne Robinson would be less abrasive.

As for the playlist game (the one where they are now careful to be begin with finales these days, in order to avoid people like me asking for the following movement) it's well past its sell-by date.

Oh, and Suzy, if you must call it a "show", the word doesn't rhyme with "now" or "cow".

In Radio Times for today ( under the CFM listings as it happens ) we are informed that Edvard Grieg lived from 1843 until 1997.

On topic : Switching on too soon again for COTW the last two days, I have discovered the usual predictable fare from Essential Classics; Mendelssohn Hebrides Overture and Prokofiev Classical Symphony. There may not be an official playlist but....
