Perhaps this has already been commented on. I never listen to the sort of programmes this thread refers to, but I did hear CD Review yesterday. In a gap towards the end, there was an advert for a Rob Cowen programme. (Yes, I thought that the BBC didn't have adverts - they've lost one of their major advantages over the other stations by introducing them.) I never expected to hear such rubbish from a (formerly) respected critic like RC: all about people stopping in their cars to text in to say they were in tears because of the music being played! It's got even worse than I realised! Surely even the targeted 'new' audience for R3 would be put off by such sentimental tripe.

I think that, unless the repertoire changes, the programme should be retitled 'Predictable Classics'. (Another couple of suggestions: instead of Ravel's 'Bolero', why not some of the less frequently heard piano pieces? And, instead of Samuel Barber's 'Adagio For Strings', why not one of the 'Essays for Orchestra'?)

Indeed, and I mentioned that ad on another thread, it's absolutely nauseating and quite frankly encourages me to turn the programme off! Surely even Rob must have misgivings about being forced to read such trite twaddle on air?

Sorry - I hadn't seen it. I must look for it now.

No need to search it out, it wasn't that profound! When I first heard the ad, I missed the beginning and thought Rob was referring to Your Call reducing people to tears!

The current title is just as meaningless and absurd.

OK, why do you think only works which have been flogged to death are either essential or classic?

Well, of course, in those days Composer of the Week was at 9am (until it was decided that it was dry and boring and should be moved to a less prominent slot). I would move it back to 9am on the grounds that those who thought it was dry and boring could tune in to R2 instead.

That was then - now we're seeking the big switch on/over from the recorded music device of choice.

So? It's a switchover time for Radio 4 too. Why can't people be allowed to switch over/off if what happens to be on doesn't appeal to them? Just broadcasting what's going to keep the largest number (half) listening is LCD programming. Second or third rate.
