On this morning's EC I heard Caccini's "Amarilli mia bella" sung by both Gigli and Montserrat Figueras.
The Gigli was from a Nimbus CD.

I believe there is another recording of Gigli, maybe released only on LP. It was used in a TV Storyville episode some years ago about a lady called Vera Drake, a product of the Raj who found returning to England very difficult.
Does anyone know about this recording, which is much more poignant than the Nimbus? I recorded a snatch of the tv programme on a video tape - not much use now.

(It wasn't Vera Drake - that was a different story)

SW declined to pursue this line of inquiry, by not listening to the cue? I took it that's what SS meant? Dangerous direction for the interview to take, possibly (i.e. not knowing where it would lead, what MH would say next)** or simply SW (like RC) being a rubbish interviewer? Or - giving the very limited time available - the need to stick closely to her script? Maggi H was on Private Passions, but I can't remember what was said.....

** PS not that it was a live interview - so no excuse there!

Thanks, Richard, you come most carefully upon your hour! I'm still a bit dozy after watching a dazzling new DVD EuroArts production of Die Meistersinger from Salzburg, last night. followed by coverage of the two late-night by-election coverage into the wee small hours.

Otherwise, I think ff responded in kind to my quotation from Richard III by picking-up a cue from several terse duologues in the play - would that Dr Walker had the same presence of mind! - and tossed it in my direction. If I'm wrong the time is ripe to stop digging.

I took SS's 'not in the giving vein' to be from Richard III, Act IV, sc 2:

Richard: … I am not in the giving vein today.
Buckingham: Why then, resolve me whether you will or no.
Richard: Thou troublest me: I am not in the vein.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

            Displaying my higgorance as usual

It occurred to me that, in fairness to SW, it's entirey possible she did pursue the matter, Maggi H really dished the dirt on Aldeburgh, and the editor removed it from the final cut!

I have to take issue with this! SW is a far better interviewer than RC, I think! Different league!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Well, OK, she's by far the best interviewer on EC , but perhaps us Suffolk-o-philes would have welcomed a bit more of a nose for a story on this occasion. Unless, of course, it was the editor's fault .

The malign influence spreads: France Musique this morning played a recording backwards and invited listeners to email them with the name.

On the other hand, Radio 3 presenters (when in tandem) rarely make mistakes in reading the CD label, be corrected by their co-presenter, spend the next few minutes giggling together about it, and be almost unable to continue,

(not sure about my verbal voices. corrections welcome).

Thats easy for you to say.

TBF, there are some works that might sound better played backwards.......

And for some it might not matter: with The Ring you'd still end up where you started!

... I think you might up in the wrong key, though

(I'm trusting you here; I know we start Das Rheingold with an E flat, but am not sure where we get to 24 hours later!)
