I think he meant dogs' home - designed for the 'lighter listener' - does he think that such, brought up on at most 5min excerpts, can possibly cope with a full symphony ?

Broadcasts of complete symphonies have taken a bit of a nose dive under the current regime. There are not much more than 60 symphonies though in the standard repetoire it seems. The average classical music lover, unless they are prepared to explore via recordings, is missing out on the opportunity to hear many hundreds of fine symphonies. If the series explores some of the symphonic byways then it would be valuable, somehow I fear it will not.

Would be great to put some positive pressure on for some interesting programming. There are plenty of hours in the day. After all, they found time for 40 complete Handel operas. Surely time for 1 C20 violin concerto every week for a year. Same thing for less heard C20 symphonies. and other things. I am sure some of the better informed on these boards could put together interesting schedules.

Symphonys interest me more than other forms of music. But I think the highest form of art is not the symphony it is the Concerto for Orchestra!

I seem to recall a time, was it really that long ago, when symphonies were regularly heard on R3, without any fuss. Does it really now require a 'major new series' to wheel them out for special examination, like some sort of rare breed? If they are heading for extinction, we know who is in no small part to blame.

Mr Wright commented on Feedback that our attention span is much shorter. Clearly this major series is designed to present an encouraging, Radio 3-type challenge to listeners: how to listen to a complete symphony.

Your are in danger of sounding like a defender of R3 again!

Anything will atrophy if it's never exercised. Shouldn't R3 be exercising the attention span in its regular programmes, not just meekly accepting the symptoms and falling in line with everyone else? Then such 'specials', which are presented in a way which implies that the frightening symphony has an aura of inapproachability, would not be necessary.

Just when you think it can't get any worse, I see that In (or should I say horribly out of) Tune will be promoting 'My Essential Symphony' with, you guessed it, more B!##$£ celebrities. Look RW I don't give a B!##%$ damn what a certain 'celebrity' thinks about a certain symphony, so drop this pathetic idea now and start putting money back into worthwhile programmes!!!

Looking at the essentail symphony programmes so far, there is reasonable mix of earlier symphonic composers, but once we get to the end of the classical period, the imagination dies and we're back with the same old composers and works again! They should have put me in charge of the series, at least I would have provided some variation and contrast. Is there anyone left at R3 with any imagination and knowledge???
