But they can only make judgements about what they know/hear. And the various forms of commercial/pop culture push themselves in everywhere. It's a bit like the conjuror's trick of 'forcing a card' on someone.
But people don't have to take the card. And they can be curious about other music apart from what is being pushed at them (for instance through the internet, which to an extent can bypass the commercial pressing of the mainstream media).

Never been in a record shop and seen the 'Now Playing' information at the counter? And the charts shows plug the message 'This is the latest thing'. And the popular radio stations have their playlists which play the same tracks a specific number of times a week (up to 20 times for Radio 1). This is about selling records, i.e. commercial.
I wonder how many people actually buy music that is being played in a record shop. And we here get fed up with stuff being played over and over again that we are familiar with (just to bring this post briefly back on topic). Are the consumers of pop music so different that they want to hear the same thing again and again, and eventually crack under the relentless pressure of marketing? Perhaps - certainly the peer pressure for teenagers counts for a fair bit but I can't easily see how that could be changed. I don't see a return to a (differently) paternalistic style of broadcasting achieving it.

This morning Petroc announced that they couldn't think of any composers associated with Bristol and would listeners please suggest some. Don't they know anything of Pearsall and Bourgeois? (If they had been listening to R3 for as long as I have, then of course they would!)

What rubbish! Of course they could think of some - they just want another excuse for encouraging listener interactivity. [DON'T tell him VW worked on The Lark Ascending with Marie Hall at Kings Weston House when they were staying there.]

ff: thank you for confirming my long-held suspicion. 'Here in the studio we're desperately trying to remember the name of that chap who wrote "Nimrod"'. Please email your answer to: elgar@dumbed-downquiz_newimprovedinteractiveradio3breakfastclas sics.

It was 'yoof call' this morning, wasn't it? I turned off before, but some mention of a 11 year old calling in...

I think they were just putting out a bait in the hopes they might get ff to text, email, 'phone etc.

Be that as it may, why Bristol, please? Any reason given? ("You know, Mike, I can't think of a single composer from Bristol. Can you?" "Well, now you ask, Petroc, neither can I. Hey, let's ask the listeners to text in with suggestions! ." "Excellent idea, Mike. And when we've done that, I can't think of any composers from Petersfield, Skegness, Bridgwater, Pickering, Plockton, Piddle Trenthide - we could keep this going until Easter.")

They were asking about Bristol because all next week the evening concert comes from St. George's in Bristol with Petroc introducing. An ideal opportunity for frenchie to hang around the stage door in the hope of some stern words with him?

The 11 year old on Your Call (having found it on iplayer) was a young musician from Stirling who is in the Sistema Scotland (off-shoot of the Gustav Dudamel project) talking about it. Obviously a tie-in to Children in Need this evening on BBC but quite an interesting call.

What a reasonable post, Anna, in answer to questions asked. Not, I'm sure, what was expected in a thread with such a loaded title. As for the theoretical stage door conversation, yes, it would be interesting to hear what two people 'only doing their jobs' would have to say to each other.

                        ???

I don't have any argument with employees who have no say in any of the Radio 3 decisions

I have some vouchers for St George's. Hmmm. Wonder what's on...
