I thought that was his background (broadcast journalism). Thence to arts journalism.

A sad thing is that he does seem to enjoy his new role. And that a fine broadcaster like Graeme Kay 'can't for the life of him' understand why anyone would not want more people to enjoy classical music.

But, then, I never really believed that many of the people paid to work at Radio 3 also listened to it as an important part of their lives. If you take from A to give to B it might be harder to understand why A is upset than if you yourself are being deprived.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

      .
Sorry, I should have said 'political journalism'. This was the area he was discussing on television last night.

In my experience, most 'specialist' journalism is a matter of learning on the job . The longer they stay, the more they learn ... Still, television, eh? Perhaps he's widening his options to prepare to make a run for it!

Has anyone noticed the resemblance between the Chancellor of the Exchequer and one of the Breakfast presenters? Are they perhaps related? I think we should be told.

          George Osborne

          Petroc Trelawny

Not convinced, however should George take over Breakfast, it would kill off the phone-in slot as George would be unlikely to answer, however he would probably not be as loud!

                Still no!

There is a connection, however, that maybe Osborne is doing for the economy what Trelawny is doing for R3!

They both have a supercilious smugness which suggests to me a similar upbringing.

O, come now - Gideon as a St Paul's boy is an oik as far as Etonians such as Cameroon and Boris are concerned...

Indeed, but he still has that supercilious smug look common to all tories. I believe it's a pre-requisite for membership.

As they say in some parts of Scotland, "faces you'd never get tired of kicking".

I wanted to say this when I first mentioned PT being on Sky News, but I recalled that on the old FoR3 messageboards we were discouraged from making disparaging personal comments about specific presenters - but, yes, PT comes over as a copy of a smug MP (I'll resist mentioning a party, but I'm sure you get my drift!!)

I was at a reception on a topic of interest to me which happened to be attended by the ranks of the great and the 'good'. It is interesting as a 'nobody' how one is invisible . I did chat to a charming bishop though who was obviously blind to my lack of usefulness as a contact. Smarmy MP's from a certain party in abundance - the type who go to Covent Garden and bray through the performance.

I suppose bishops have a useful contact which out-ranks even the best connected MPs.

I was brought up never to comment on or to cast aspersions on a lady's character but the gentlemen were fair game. A somewhat old fashioned attitude today and likely to be decried by some but I still think we can get stuck into scrutiny of the Cornishman along with the Chancellor while Ms SMP should remain off limits.

I could never imagine either Osborne or Trelawny being self-effacing. There is self confidence about both of them which gets on the nerves and they both give the impression that they have deigned to come below stairs to benefit us with their enormous knowledge and understanding. (Someone might now tell me that PT was a grammar school boy in which case I will have to regroup and take a fresh run at this.)

I'd be quite happy with a sub-forum just for adhominem criticism of Trelawny
