I recognise the quote from Beecham and would love to hear his comments on tweets etc. He had a way of putting things

It was quite by happenstance I quoted Beecham - and no from what you tell us of Sir Tommy he probably wouldn't be a re-tweeter or whatever

I agree His bon mots would lend themselves admirably to the medium.

Dear me. There is more pride and prejudice on this thread than in a whole Jane Austen novel. I wonder whether the denizens of the Stormy Weather thread are aware of the irony of their castigating Twitter for its alleged inanities (although as none of them have a Twitter a/c, its hard to see how they draw this conclusion) in light of such pontifications as: "5 am and chilly on Kent borders"; "I've run out of milk; will have to send the cat out to get some more". It seems to me that these gnomic utterances would fit their wildly inaccurate view of the format admirably.

It's one thing to talk about the weather but who wants to know details of my life, which is extremely boring these days. From what I've seen of twitter, conversations are degrees below these boards where we are at least bound together by a love of music. salymap, 81 and 7 months old is off to make a coffee in the kitchen.

I'm sipping a cup of tea and thinking about putting some clothes on to take the car to the garage to have a sensor changed

I suppose a lot of these ‘denizens of the Stormy Weather’ are rather like trained singers singing out of tune for fun amongst friends.

It strikes me that blaming Twitter or Facebook for whatever it is they are being blamed for here is rather like saying the telephone is responsible for people asking other people how they are without really wanting them to answer . It depends what you use the things for. You can use them to tell the fraction of the population you know what you had for breakfast or how you got your hangover; or you can use them to post links to interesting articles, organise a protest movement (just steer clear of 'jokes' about riots, though), publicise a concert, or comment on what's going on in your part of the world. They are a medium, not a message like (though the 140 characters limit on Twitter clearly does shape the message. At least it puts a break on prolix and not terribly interesting contributions like this o

Is that taken from the Stormy Weather thread?
Perhaps you lack the imagination to consider Twitter's ability to disseminate information to interested groups.

I'm sure it can disseminate information to interested groups
                    and it obviously does
what i find tedious is the relentless "knee jerk" nature of it

I was at a meeting about a music project in London yesterday, one of the people I was meeting was from a large music organisation. As part of her job she had to "tweet" about what she was doing on an ongoing basis .......now , when we get to the actual composition phase of the project there will be interesting things to say i'm sure as there will when we get to the performances , but "I'm getting the 59 bus to a meeting about ................" is hardly worth reading.......

I've most likely missed many things that I would find interesting because I can't be arsed wading through mountains of mundanity.

Confusing knowledge with information is a mistake IMV

Wonderful programme - with challenging playlists and presenters whose depth of knowledge is second to none, no wonder the entire nation now listens to the all-new 3beebies!

'tis true and in the heat of the moment I suppose we must not ever excuse such things. She did, at least, not repeat the shameful error when she apologised again later.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

I'm more forgiving of such on-air gaffes - and pleased to see that our own vigilance (or rather SC's) is rewarded and Ein Heldenleben is now correctly listed as being by Richard Strauss and not Johann Strauss II.

                              [I thought SMP's mistake - Msg #370 - was in inadvertently referring to Breakfast as 3beebies ]
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

As is confusing the medium with the message.
