The Radio 3 twitter feed would have retweeted it deliberately. One can do a search on key words (e.g. Radio 3) or put a "#" tag in front of a phrase or word in order to "trend". What their motivation was for so doing, who can say?

I think it must have been sabotage - maybe one of the For3 mob has hacked into the Radio 3 Twitter feed - as this tweet has now mysteriously disappeared.

Exactly. We look back in horror at places like this:

Read, in particular, about the visits on Tuesday. With Big Brother, X Factor, and now it seems Radio 3, have we really progressed very much?

I don't see/hear it as".....sheer cynical exploitation" - I heard it and that never crossed my mind. I don't think for one moment this was specifically targeted by Breakfast. I have heard the majority of others and this is unique - this week as I mentioned elsewhere we had the 71st Bishop of Lincoln who didn't sound exploited to me.
Whilst I have no problem with tweets and texts I find it mildly amusing that a lot of people seem to actively "search them out" on Twitter, Facebook etc. something, shamefully perhaps, I would never bother to do.

We're given to believe that there is 'an appetite' for this kind of interactivity and that many people email in to participate. So this one was chosen from among all the rest.

Many people are interested in hearing about other people's tragedies and griefs. But whether that's a legitimate way to attract them to Radio 3 to listen to classical music, I would doubt. Maybe it'll become the Oprah Winfrey 'must listen' moment on Radio 3 which half the audience is appalled about and the other half tunes in specially to listen to.

            Know thy enemy

(Btw, the tweet was still there - I think it might have been retweeted along with SMP's tweet. I note R3 has 9 times more tweets than followers. The proportions are usually reversed. How much time does R3 staff spend tweeting - and couldn't they spend it on making the online content more accurate?)

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

For goodness' sake, who names these things. 'Twitter', 'Tweet', 'Retweeted'. They sound like a child's game. I only heard of them recently. [Sorry to sound like that Judge but.........]

I have heard of Facebook because a young relative asked me to join. No thanks.

One feels or rather hopes the latter is more common in Sidcup!

Very well put. There are plenty of other places where people can confess their private matters to all and sundry, or to hear them for that matter, whereas there is only one place where we could listen to classical music without being exposed to chat and confessions. A quiet carriage syndrome…

[ed.] this (my bit) is not at all well put. No it is not a legitimate way to attract listeners to a station that is meant to provide serious listening of classical music. But how do we argue rationally/objectively that this is not a legitimate way to get people interested in listening to classical music?

I once sent a text message to someone I don't know by mistake
I don't really see the point of doing it on purpose

Talking of tweet [birds - geddit], for what it's worth, a sort of convergent evolution seems to be at work across the BBC. Spring and Autumnwatch used, in the days of Simon King and Bill Oddie, be (mainly) about wildlife. Now it's about the presenters and audience participation - "presenterwatch" as someone has perceptively called it. The presenters are interchangeable with the R3 ones, with Michaela Strachan (the latest addition) as a sort of thinking man's Katie Derham.

What a brilliant idea - someone could infiltrate the BBC Record Library and detonate all the CDs of works that are overplayed, or maybe if they are not to be played in full. No more Bolero, no 1st movt of Beethoven 5th in isolation!
