DIDO’S LAMENT ON YOUR CALL AT 8.30

Sara M-P: And now Your Call, and on the line from Athens is Dido. Kalimera, Dido!

Dido: Good morning, Sara. I’m sorry, this is no time for jokes.

SMP: I’m sorry. I realise you lost your husband recently.

D: Yes, very sad. He disappeared.

SMP: I believe he was last seen in Piraeus?

D: Yes, yes. He’s been gone for a long time now.

SMP: And you’ve been searching for him?

D: Yes, I’m thinking maybe he went back to Turkey... I might have to go there to look for him.

SMP: It’s been a difficult and sad time for you.

D: Yes, and of course we have the worry about the economic situation and the Euro as well.

SMP: And I believe this piece of music is something that helps you with this...?

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Just for a moment there ...

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I think you should email that in to the Breakfast team.

It rather amused me in the 'Step into our World' trails, that this aria was chosen for the tired, stressed businessman ...

I'm not sure how retweeting works, but R3 have just retweeted: "First we get Star Wars theme & now Harry Potter. Sometimes I wonder if R3 has morphed into ClassicFM! :-(."

Film music is film music, but really! there's a lot more around than John Williams's stuff for latterday blockbusters. Still, I daresay they know what they're doing

i felt for the chap having had a similar problem with the officiating parasites at my own mother's funeral ... i would not want to mock the person who called here, it was a heartfelt genuine and moving ..... that is why it shut SMP up and she just played it ....

It was indeed and I thought SMP handled it well as she/her producer did when the final CD exploded!

Me too! Ms Less-Nectarine's tone of voice is caught perfectly...

No It was someone else's tweet - and R3 retweeted it. I just don't know if tweets get retweeted automatically if they mention R3 - for good or ill. Or whether someone at R3 reweeted the original tweet.

What a pity that the CD which exploded this morning c.8.45 was a rare recording of the little-known Kaiser Waltz by Richard Strauss.

Having read what was on Facebook I'm actually very disturbed by this Your Call item:

"Maggie Hinder Geoff - sounds worth missing - which I did. Was this the 'your call' spot? I'm deliberately not telling them aobut the time I bunked off school to get home for CE - and was rewarded by my first hearing of the Allegri. Heady stuff!

Geoff Pearson Your Call indeed. The poor man wanted Dido's Lament at his mother's funeral and the priest cut it off before the vital last line. He said he almost shouted at at the ceremony. He was on the verge of tears.

Gavin Mist That sounds terrible, Geoff and I'm glad I didn't hear it (I deliberately avoid YC anyway). I wonder what compels people to ring in to a radio station to share this kind of thing. Beyond me, I'm afraid.

Paul Sheppard Had to turn the radio off during the phone call. I feel for the poor chap but Radio 3 is not the place for this sort of programme imho.
This morning's Break'fess was an all time low point for the station"

This is absolutely not because one is bereft of human compassion for people who have suffered, or are grieving. It's the sheer cynical exploitation (in my view) à la Oprah Winfrey of sharing people's most intimate feelings with what amount to the audio equivalent of voyeurs. In my view.
