Hello Pete - what are you doing in Oz - if it's you?

Great stuff, there! I'm very pleased that the Guardian discussion (well, I know it's mostly me, but I was told I was expected to respond) is staying serious and not descending to mindless abuse. Yet!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Hi Sarah. I am living in Adelaide most of the year now. Back to the UK for a couple of months every year - I'm getting soft and I need the warmth. Still listen to R3 on the web.The
recent publicity prompted to me to make a visit. Hope you are well.

Good to hear from you, Pete. Remember the long email exchanges we used to have at one point - mainly about Late Junction, if I remember? I may have moderated my views as a result! Enjoy the sunshine - hope the approaching summer isn't too hot and dry for you.

Am I well? - it's an uphill, soul-destroying task - especially when you see on Facebook the kind of listeners R3 is trying to attract. The deluge approaches!

ff, the Facebook 'invasion' was as a result of a singer from a TV programme called "Glee" (which I'd never heard of before but which is very popular, I understand) being on "In Tune" yesterday. Apparently, this singer put a link to the R3 page on her website so that's why the 'camp followers' appeared.

I thought your Guardian article - and responses to the comments - very well argued.

          Thanks.

Thanks for the explanation, hmvman. I had an inkling that might have been the case. It makes me on balance favour scorn rather interest in the whole Facebook/Twitter thing, especially as you can see that as far as the BBC is concerned it's just a promotional tool, and is used by others (orchestras, performers) in the same way. No objection but it isn't really a service for listeners.

A great deal of derision greeted the original mention of 'Glee' but I hadn't yet discovered what it referred to

              FF:
I've been on Facebook for some time and use it primarily as a tool to keep in touch with authors/friends who in turn use it for promtional and networking. I "liked" the BBCR3 with some trepidation as I knew that at some stage I'd be sucked into some kind of "exchange" and sure enough our old sparring partner "cavatina" surfaces berating those who question R3's trends. It was at the point that we were called "two-bit xenophobes" that I backed out of the discussion. Others have gamely battled on. The flush of Glee supporters yesterday was an aberration that showed up In Tune in a bad light with one passing through suggesting another poster should p*ss off.

And there's only so many times one can post the word "bland" against the Breakfast playlist without boring both yourself and others.

Still, I am sure the response isn't quite what R3 wanted from their Facebook page so I'm happy to stay on station as it were and occasionally chip in.

              pip, pip!

I think the expression used was stronger even than that.

I have to agree with you B-o-D. The only way to raise the level of debate on Facebook is for more forum members to post there; if for no other reason than to ensure that another side to Cavatina's endless witterings and straw man arguments is put.

You're doing a great job. I'm still steering clear of Facebook and Twitter myself, though I did wonder whether you had tumbled to the fact that the RW Fan Club (US Branch) had joined the fray!

Oh yes - as I mentioned on another thread.

I'm on facebook but can't be bothered with twitter which seems absolutely pointless. Haven't joined the R3 facebook page yet though as I might antagonise a few people

Just has a quick look at the page and yes I see that the RW US fan club has made an appearance, the style is instantly recogniseable! It would be nice to become friends with a few Board posters, very few of my facebook 'friends' are classical music lovers sadly.

Yesterday evening I made a comment about one of RW's posts directly beneath it. I shall attempt not to reply to his US fan club's posts, as it's rather like banging your head off a brick wall.

Happy to link up suffolkcoastal if you should wish - I'm the fellow in the white DJ standing by a red and white sculpture in Glyndebourne gardens. I've made a couple of pertinent posts on R3's Facebook page!

I'm hoping that someone (after Feedback is broadcast) will start a topic about it on Facebook so all reaction can be kept together. Not that I have high hopes of the programme, knowing RW's skill at wriggling out of any direct answers.

She has at least two persona on there as far as I can tell! Interesting that someone called Roger Wright posted yesterday. I don't think it's the man himself (is that stating the b******g obvious?)

Well, if you click on the name, it says "Radio 3", so it's either him or an imposter!
