Haven't checked but Nacht und Träume must be one of the most frequently chosen Schubert songs on PP, I've heard it at least 3 times. An interesting selection today by Jackie Kay included it sung by Roland Hayes, a new name to me but a fine performance. An extraordinary song (when well performed) which hovers on the brink between consciousness and the unconscious like no other.
My favourite Schubert song again on PP

What was that little series called that used to close Radio 3 before TTN and 24-hour broadcasting? Wasn't that 'Favourite Schubert Songs' or something similar? It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Never heard that.....
I've got Nacht und Träume sung by Murray and Flott, both with Graham Johnson, but have heard countless versions on R3. It doesn't usually work sung by a male voice IMV, though Hayes on this ancient recording sung it in a sort of half head voice which hit the spot.

With 600 or so lieder to choose from it's difficult to settle on one particular favourite. Standchen, perhaps, or Heidenroslein, or Du bist die Ruh'... There are so many masterpieces. Although it's an early piece, Schubert's setting of Erlkonig is definitely one of his finest Goethe songs, although Loewe did a pretty good job with it too.

It goes back to 1978: on seven nights a week, R3 closed with 'And Tonight's Schubert Song'
'Du bist die Ruh' - and, having just listened to it, so to bed ...It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
