Awful, between tracks, sound torture & boredom

I must admit I listen to so little R3 nowadays that I have to ask: why - if it is indeed the case - are they plugging TV programmes on the radio?

Do correct me if I have got the wrong end of the rattlesnake...

Equally though, the thing on TV where just as you were going to check various things on the credits, some announcer comes banging in, usually free of glo''l stops, and the screen is minimised so they can get the plug in... Bloody annoying.

TV ads on R3 have been happening for quite some time; the R3 (and R4) ads are bad enough but the TV ones are the limit as far as I'm concerned - noisy, often incomprehensible due to lack of context, and very, very intrusive. Even the David Attenborough ones get me responding with "please, noooo".
The disrespect for credits is a very long-running issue. I can remember at least 15 or 20 years ago complaints appearing in the Radio Times about it; like the perennial problems of loud background "music" obliterating the spoken commentary, they get a stock reply(along the lines of we know best, go away) and the issue is ignored. I still don't understand why the outfits to which the credits apply don't bring pressure to bear. Perhaps they do but only the big ones have enough clout?

BBC iPlayer is especially bad at this. For some reason, it is programmed to take me swiftly to some other programme at the expense of the credits of the one I have chosen to watch. Infuriating!

Interesting point . On live TV they tend to squeeze the so called craft credits but leave the final production credit (the so called end cap) full frame. That’s the one the independent production companies are interested in. Problem is that there are now often so many coproducers the company that actually made the thing is squeezed in that. You wouldn’t believe the rules on who gets a final credit and where.
The problem with squeezing the craft credits is that if you genuinely want to know who the camera op or editor was you can’t easily find out . However if you are nifty enough on iPlayer or ITVX etc you can usually stop the next programme or episode rolling up before the credits are over. It must be very annoying if you are a freelance and this is your best advert.

To be honest the reason most people want a credit is so that their mum can spot their name and ring up afterwards!

They do this a lot in 'Woman's Hour'; they seem unaware that, in a well-made film the sound is not meant to be heard alone and often does not make sense without the picture.

Indeed and it’s overly compressed with the effects track too loud against speech. The TV trails run on Radio 3 are particularly egregious examples. I’ve had a lifelong professional battle against over compression in TV but , aside from this forum , have decided to retire from the fray.
Mind you everyone on the forum seems to agree on this one.

If you’re swift with the ‘back’ button on the remote (via my Firestick tv platform/app anyway), the short countdown to some new programme or episode can be eliminated and the credit sequence watched in full with no announcers etc. It’s a benefit of iPlayer… but you do have to be quick on the draw

Yup one of several new "features" that has appeared recently. Have they let the intern experiment with his programming skills?

I don't like the new "return to start button" that appears when you start a programme you were halfway through. Now when I pause right after restarting I get taken back to the start of the programme!

Why do I have to say to Alexa "ask bbc sounds to play radio 3" on firestick, rather than just "play radio 3"! (I also have to say it twice almost every time!) Why does she randomly play radio 3 on one of three devices rather than sticking to the device I'm speaking into?

Ah, I’ve never used the voice command option on the Firestick remote yet. Must give it a try…

My main gripe with BBC Sounds is the grating ‘ident’ that starts many (but not all) stored programmes. Most stored R3 items like concerts seem mercifully to be exempt from starting with this, ditto R4extra, but R4 programmes often seem to feature it at the start

It’s a sudden, harsh electronic/metallic buzzing noise which gets right on my ear-nerves as does the following brash voice unattractively declaiming “BBC SOUNDS - MUSIC, RADIO, PODCASTS”

And it intrudes into listening in another way, because of course, increasingly-ailing Auntie (who seems currently to need the Intensive Care Unit) has to insert trailers randomly into the middle of R3 programmes so that without notice, an agreeable programme (an Afternoon Concert from last month I was enjoying this week, for instance) is suddenly marred by the harsh buzz/brash voice of a damn BBC Sounds trailer

Well I think you’ll find most other streaming apps are the same - Netflix, Prime etc. All have the ability to be used by multiple members of a family, so that each can have an account with their own ‘recently watched’ list, etc.

So it may be an extra click on your name if you’re the only one using it, but it’s a functionality that makes the app more flexible for use by more than one person
