Peer into the root of the word, you'll find it has a greater element of care implied in the selection and/or presentation process than "choice" "sequence" or "selection" itself....
"from Medieval Latin cūrātus, from cūrāre "to have spiritual charge of" " (Merriam-Webster); a curate was one "dedicated to caring for souls"....
Rather apt for artistic matters and "care-full" selections, one would think...
Language is organic, creative, historical, habitual...it never stops changing through usage....
Synonyms, the more the better, should be relished for their shades of meaning...especially when they go this deep.Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 15-03-21, 16:27.

Agree with Jayne. Surely curate is not objectionable as a back-formation from curator. As the definition elucidates, a curator doesn't just select. It has connotations of coherent arrangement for a specific purpose, of displaying the chosen items with a view to effective communication to others and of bearing overall responsibility for the project. New words catch on if people find them useful and survive if they plug a gap. After a while the newness which some may find irksome wears off.

Whether with or without his 'curation' / occupation of presenter seat or what, Skelly has been for a long, long time saddled with one of the least happy bits of programming on R3.
IMO, the prog is a mess, doesn't know what it's trying to do, and I.S. has been called on to behave like a clumsy, trying to be chummy, visiting vicar / DJ, a bundle of roles that fits him less well than almost any other presenter on R3. Whether I.S. is / has become reposnsible for that tone, or whether that is in the brief, it is certainly for me the effect.Last edited by DracoM; 15-03-21, 17:16.

I've now just located his announcement. Very strange - he said there was 'no plan to announce it formally'. No, there never is when they think audiences won't like it. Present them with a fait accompli. I remember Mark Russell saying that after he and Robert Sandall had been told that Mixing It was being dropped, a senior Radio 3 producer sat in on their programme to 'discourage' them from saying anything on air.
Jonathan Swain went from that same high profile time slot to Through the Night. Every now and again Radio 3 has a clear-out of it most competent presenters.Last edited by french frank; 15-03-21, 17:42.It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. *the curator of the Brass Band selection says he has spent “days” on selecting 15 pieces - but obviously there’s a lot of archive to choose from . Still strikes me as basic music production rather than curation which implies some sort of theme or trying to establish a relationship between a widely disparate collection of objects ; or illustrating an artist’s development .
PS good to hear more Brass Band on R3 . Bring back Sounds of Brass !
