Ian is doing a very good job presenting this Moscow Synodal Choir relay on at the moment . The singing in it is extraordinary... absolutely wonderful in fact. That mezzo just now - what a voice ..
he seems to me to really engage with his listeners, rather than treating them as providers of interesting selections.
If you remember the kerfuffle over the BBC messageboards when Classical Forum became Classical Music on Radio 3 with restrictions on what we could discuss (no Choral Evensong board, for example), it was made clear that the boards were for the BBC's benefit, not for the public, to provide content which could be 'fed into' the live programmes. Now they use tweets and emails instead.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
It’s a pity R3 isn’t like today all the time - great performances of interesting music deftly presented by an excellent broadcaster with genuine enthusiasm and a few strategic facts

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Although it is a matter of regret that he has left EC I think this really shows his skills - a great deal of unfamiliar music , unfamiliar performers and possibly having to listen to both producer and someone talking in a foreign language in his ear . Remarkable really.

I agree - but it wasn't necessary to remove him from EC in order to have the benefit of his skills on the occasional event such as this.

Thing is Afternoon Concert is a bit of an overlooked jewel in the crown . Some wonderful stuff recently ...
Exactly. I’m looking forward to IS presenting it

Not exactly taxing when you think that Local Radio presenters are doing 4 hour stints week in week out!
I think theoretically R3 presenters are supposed to do their own research (even if that's more likely to be Wikipedia than Grove - or anything more specialised) and then write their scripts. Not sure what local radio presenters are expected to do. In any case, I suspect pay is based, somehow, on how many hours are worked, so c. 30 hours per month on Essential Classics has to be made up by 'equivalent' hours elsewhere to make the same pay cheque.

The good Radio Cornwall presenters do their research and earn their corn! Most of them are grafters and not prima donnas!
