My bad, but every time I see JRR written here I wonder what you're Tolkein about...

I can even bring myself to mention programming like the Janáček Day, which brought together contributors like Tom Stoppard, Milan Kundera, John Tusa, Dennis Marks, and a concert with Charles Mackerras. That really probed deeply into the subject. River of Music, anyone?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

JRR has been a victim many times in the past. When it was on Saturdays it would often be pulled if the opera relay was earlier.

Jazz has always been eminently droppable on R3 really though it shouldn’t be. On the Discovery and Innovation front I did think some of the music was of very variable quality ranging from the frequently played masterpiece to the frankly not very good. There is a lot of excellent contemporary music out there but I don’t think the music selection always reflected that . I do wonder who selects the repertoire and what criteria they employ..

basically R3 is broke (as is I suspect the whole BBC as the TV licence fee effectively becomes optional) - these multiple repeats are of material for which they have to pay little or no repeat fees as the orchestras are employees of the BBC - if R3 survives the following 4 years there will be many more such repackaging of repeats of the various BBC orchestra.
I suspect R4 will remain a key National broadcast channel possibly with subvention from Government - the remainder of the channels will move to some form of pay-as-you-listen or subscription model for which the BBC Sounds system is easily adapted to - the VHF network will be switched off - what happens to DAB I suspect is that it will become an advert heavy network

ETA There was an interesting Analysis program on R4 on Sat evening - drew heavily on the material written in the late 1950s which drew on the wartime and late 40s/early 50s austerity Britain when there were few mass communication channels (BBC, cinemas) which were shared by all of Britain and did I think drive a common culture - immigration, Thatherism etc destroyed this from the 60s onward and I suspect too little is left for organisations such as the BBC to survive

I have to say I'm struggling to find any rationale behind the programming whatsoever. Even Afternoon on 3 has over-arching themes; here there are seemingly random performances by each of the BBC orchestras, bleeding chunks of concerts and on the whole even the newish works are either by the most familiar names or 'soft contemporary'. Discovery and Innovation seems a complete misnomer to me.

To your point Ein Alpensinfonie (nicely played so far ) followed by an excerpt from the Asian Network Prom which I have a suspicion will be Bollywood. Indian classical music great - but Bollywood is to that what Bavarian oompah bands are to Strauss .....

                      Exactly.

I'm quite happy that the Strauss is being broadcast as it was a performance I attended and it will be interesting to see how my memory of it stands up to a repeat hearing - but it's seven years old. I would have preferred to have heard the whole concert repeated (all Strauss).

This is such a good performance I’m warming to the whole concept particularly as Sunday mornings tend to be a bitty pot pourri usually !

Haven’t heard any of it but looking at the schedule, I get a whiff of quota-filling and self-justificatory box-ticking rather than any coherent artistic theme or rationale
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

R3's discovery and innovation? Trying out pieces of music lasting longer than 10 minutes on magazine programmes?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Careful now: who knows what they're planning next!

The BBC has been forced to deny it finds classical music “dull, embarrassing or only for old people” after sending out an advert for the Proms that referenced only house music, sci-fi film scores and breakdancing.

(Front page in today's Telegraph: the article is behind a paywall.)

It’s worth reading as some of those quoted complaining about the advert speak with a great deal of authority. The D and I Philharmonic / Hallé concert this morning was a classic illustration - the BBC Phil and Hallé were featured in a superb Proms performance ofEin Alpensinfonie and then as a filler a five minute excerpt from an Asian Network Prom. Modern Indian Pop music isn’t really their genre and although the brass usually make a good fist of it because many will have jazz , musical pit experience the strings really struggle to swing - not that the iffy string arrangements help them. The gear change from the Strauss to the pop was not of Lewis Hamilton quality either ...
