    Discovery and Innovation weekend

At first, I was a little put out by the shortening of Record Review this morning, but was soon choking on my words, when it seemed that Radio 3 was at last doing something worthwhile in presenting more modern music.
Okay, it's only one weekend, and it will probably be forgotten about from Monday onwards, but let's give credit when it's due. Naturally, the commentary is one continuous advertisement for the BBC. The number of times those three (two?) letters are being repeated may be irritating, but the music itself is most refreshing.

OK, but no reason for the BBC to shunt JRR right off Sunday's schedule...

... especially as CE (worthy as it is) is still present, despite being available on Sounds from Wednesday!

I know I'm a party pooper but … just to make up for it, and show a bit of public spirit (for once), here's this morning's programme:

A weekend of discovery and innovation from the BBC orchestras and choirs.

      I did smile at:

"The BBC SO kick off a weekend of discovery and innovation from the BBC orchestras and choirs with music by Anna Meredith, Harrison Birtwistle, Elizabeth Maconchy and Walton."

That will be … William Walton, I presume? You know you've arrived when they omit your first name.

      And this afternoon: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000t7yz

"The BBC Scottish SO play music by Sibelius, Helen Grime, Hanna Tuulikki and Jonathan Harvey.

I do have one carp though - it shouldn't need special weekends, days, seasons, anniversaries &c to include regularly such 'innovations', be they women, ethnic minority, contemporary. Just a firm hand on the tiller ensuring that they get a fair crack of the whip throughout the year.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

          Agreed!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Is there a religion quota on R3?

I don’t think there is a quota, just a requirement to broadcast services with ‘ a strong musical element.( see section 5.3, but I may have missed something)

The music involved this weekend isn't always especially "new", no.....but responding to two days (two days, oh how terrible!) of what is undoubtedly (in the present cultural context) innovative programming with comments about "where's my favourite program?", the only thing this thread is saying to radio 3 is: "damned if you do, damned if you don't..."

Of course it shouldn't need special weekends... but the effort is being made, and it should be encouraged, surely....

News and religious broadcasting are both part of the BBC's non-negotiable 'public service' output. There may be an unstated 'quota'. At least CE does have a worthwhile musical content. As far as I know there's no 'quota' for jazz or world music either. Amounts can fluctuate according to the whims of controllers. At least the jazz that is broadcast is aimed at jazz enthusiasts - more than can be said about the classical output being aimed at classical enthusiasts.

In this instance I think the snotiness is justified. If you check you will see that Jazz Record Requests is being cancelled in favour of an alternative hour of.... not something "new", but a re-broadcast - a re-broadcast - of last Wednesday's Choral Evensong.

Certainly distributing the exotic fruit more evenly through the cake would help to avoid the inevitable grumbles when regular programmes get displaced, although there will always be situations when it is deemed appropriate to give over big chunks or airtime to a particular occasion I think.
