    Piazzolla Cacophony by Golijov

Oh how I absolutely hate Piazzolla's music and that string piece in homage to him by Golijov was absolutely awful. Overrated composers, both of them!

I do not know the work in question but will seek it out. I read you comments as quite a recommendation.

      Here's an interesting tango:

I confess it was sent as a Valentine card to me.

I like Piazzolla in small doses. I suppose he was an obsessive I know nothing about the tribute piece!

No, I am simply expressing an opinion and have a right to do so. After all, there are lots of other "dislikes" on here....

But jayne was availing herself of Ludwig Wittgenstein's reference to the inexpressible - in words, that is.

...an absence of Love is, in the purest sense, an absence of understanding....

                I like some Golijov.

It's not always a popular view, but there it is.

Indeed, but that doesn’t make it any more valid - simply slightly more erudite.

In judging its artistic value ("absolutely awful"), is the subjective "absolute hatred" of a musical work or of a composer as valid as the liking, or the love, of such?

Perhaps, at least as regards music, everyone has a right to like or dislike something, and also if they really must, to express that view publicly. Others don’t have to agree, and can make their own inferences. I dislike most pop music, but I realise that there’s not a lot of point in my raising that view over and over.

Simply: likes/dislikes need no justification; judgements do.

Big difference between saying: "I hate Piazzolla" and "Golijov and Piazzola are overrated composers" - the latter needs examples, comparisons and argument; the former doesn't.
(The title of this thread is itself a dismissive judgement).

Consider: "I hate Mahler, his music always exhausts me"

                          and

"Mahler's Symphonies are overrated; they show a poor understanding of symphonic form"....

The jazz pianist Keith Tippett expressed such a view - I can't now remember whether it was in a radio interview or in conversation with a group of us - when he said, "If you say you hate my music", I can go with that because I have no alternative but to. But when you say 'you music is rubbish', I think we're entitled to know in what way it is rubbish".

I can listen to Piazzolla's music for nanoseconds on end.
