    Handel's mishmash

I'm sorry but what on earth was that ridiculous arrangement of "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" doing on the programme this morning? Come on, stop this nonsense now and play us something worthwhile...........it might seem clever at first but it's just plain annoying. Oh and SK, please take a breath after each sentence.

Presumably Essential Classics, sometime before 0938.

Eighth track in by the look of the listings on iPlayer Radio.

          'Handel Goes Wild' eh!

I can understand why someone would make an arrangement but it doesn't work for me. Not to my taste. I'd say it's an arrangement to avoid.

Christina Pluhar has indeed done some lovely things and also some pretty dodgy ones - but anyway Handel himself lifted the main idea for this piece from Telemann's Tafelmusik, together with about 40 others. I guess he wanted to get his money's worth for subscribing to its publication.

Yes, Christina Pluhar I have enjoyed some of her work which I agree can be variable in quality. I had chance to review this album. I'm glad I didn't now.

I don't like the Handel however it's played but I usually enjoy L'Arpeggiata's take on most things. I think 'Zefiro Torna' is wonderful!

I don’t know if this should be on the Playlist Board but as C. Pluhar is mentioned:

This always makes me terribly nostalgic (the concert was in 2007, I think)

That's gorgeous, he's easily the best modern countertenor.

I have all of Pluhar's earlier recordings and think they are wonderful. I felt that the rot set in with that awful Purcell disc and this Handel one is seemingly of the same ilk.

That Purcell disc achieved a rare one star in The Guardian.
They've dazzled in the past, but L'Arpeggiata's jazz improvisations on Purcell are a step too far for Nicholas Kenyon

To me, this is their best album.

and this is a more recent, very enjoyable concert.

I first discovered Pluhar et al through their first discs for Alpha...largely 'folksy' rustic repertoire in which I think they are at their best. The recordings have now happily been collected together in a box.
