    Bach Immersion

I know that for some this is going to invalidate me as a poster, but I've already had it with the pretty well non-stop Bach we've already had and are set for more, much more.

Every time the BBC does one of these 'immersion' experiences, it has for me the same effect - i.e. killing off / damaging my enthusiasm for the victim of the immersion. Even Bach, yes for me, even Bach.

Apologies, but I'm growling with frustration.

Yep, but at least it is (allegedly) only one day rather than a whole week! IIRC it was the Mozart immersion fest that brought me to these boards.

Just one day? I note your “allegedly”. It seems to me that every time I have turned on R3 this week there has been a Bach (or Back as one announcer persists in calling the composer) piece playing.

          Hiya DracoM,

Of course Baroque music is always extremely popular over the Advent season, especially the festive period. I love the music of JS Bach and it features throughout the year as it takes my fancy. But the wall-to-wall JS Bach we are having now and the lashings of it during the Christmas period overall feels somewhat overindulgent to me.

I never get "bored" with Bach but these immersions that the Beeb do, are to me, rather a lack of programming.

Well I am still waiting with bated breath for the non-stop complete Haydn immersion month.

I haven't noticed the "non-stop"/'thon overkill effect at all this week: at the moment I'm listening to Tom McKinney discussing some remarkable (for the time of day!) New Music with AMcG. For me, the dispersal of a lot of Bach (always a good thing) amongst other Musics is far from a problem.

I've been checking over the playlists to see how much of an "Immersion" it is. Not as much as the original A Bach Christmas in 2005. Mind you, back in those days there were those delighted to find Radio 3 playing classical music at all at certain times, especially in the latter part of the evening. However, that was the general era of Late Junction, expanded world music including World Music Day on New Year's Day, jazz during the daytime, Brian Kay's Light Programme, Andy Kershaw, Mixing It, and other classical programmes including a liberal mix of similar items, on the grounds that that was 'what Radio 3 did'.

Notwithstanding that some people liked individual aspects very much indeed, and lamented their passing (if they did pass), there were those who were listening selectively to the Christmas round-the-clock Bach during a week when most people are too busy to listen to their usual amount of radio anyway.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I think tomorrow's "nobbut Bach" day might stretch my enthusiasm - mostly because quite a lot of it is of the "itsy-bitsy" presentation. But for today - with 21st Century Music, Wagner, Bach's predecessors featured in broadcasts - I've been very happy. (In fact, I'm not interested in the Saturday Classics, so I'm planning on listening to ... the fifth Cantata from the "Christmas Oratorio". )

Terribly sorry to hear on Music Matters of David Watkin's illness, which I hadn't previously known.

I agree. If I never ever hear another piece of Bach then I will die a happy man.

... that is one of the saddest things I have seen on these boards. Ever.

Having Bach rammed down your throat for days on end does that to a man.
