And Rob, if you're still there: is there some reason for reading out suggestions if you aren't choosing to play them? Or reading out the name if you aren't going to reveal what they suggested anyway? Like reading out the names of people who got the brainteaser answer wrong?
So … why? Actually, why do it? Is it to fill in the allotted amount of speech v music time?
... indeed, why ever read out anyone's name? Who is interested?
The people whose names are read out and possibly one or two of their mates. For everyone else it can be incredibly annoying.
... precisely. And those who find it makes them feel important to have their names read out - well, they should bloody well grow up. This is supposed to be a channel for grown-ups...
Just so you know, I have the brown Grove here, Barker's Dictionary, Slonimsky's Music since 1900 - as well as the Dictionary of National Biography (from the beginning to around 1990), the complete Oxford Dictionary (all 20 volume, purchased from my local library for £30!!!) and scores of music books and music scores. So I tend to check Wiki thoroughly. Sometimes they even improve on the knowledge garnered from my front room. Trouble is, what with the CDs (and a long row of vinyl), there's a severe lack of space http://www.for3.org/forums/images/smilies/f_horror.gif but I have a wonderfully supportive wife, who fully understands the concept of care in the communityhttp://www.for3.org/forums/images/smilies/f_winkeye.gif Best Rob
I was most certainly not including you in the "no names, no pack drill" ROb. Apart from anything else, you get plenty of pack drill with your rucksack.
Don't know if this has already been mentioned, but the Christmas Radio Times - which reaches the pit heaps two days later than London (WHY!!!!???) - contains this entry for Christmas Day
" 9.00 Essential Classics with Ian Skelly
9.30 Rob plays a well known piece and invites suggestions for further listening "

..... !!!!! ?????
I didn't think Ian was taking over until the New Year - when Rob also starts on CFM. Radio Times getting a bit ahead of itself?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
"Christmas Day 2017 will be very special this year for broadcaster Ian Skelly, who will start his new role as a presenter of Essential Classics live on air."

Part of a general trend in the BBC to include 'vox pop' whenever possible? News reports now seem to have an obligatory statement from a passer-by, however banal.

Griff Rhys Jones has certainly changed in appearance of late, if that photo is anything to go by.
