Nielsen Wind Quintet on Sunday Morning

What a fantastic piece of music and how brilliantly played this morning. Hard to believe it was recorded at a live concert and not 'honed' in a studio. Carl Nielsen is always full of surprises for me...very difficult to put a finger on his style or on his place in 20th cent music.

I very much enjoyed it, too.

This was Jonathan Swain’s farewell programme. He said ‘Sarah Walker will have an envious task of….’. Whatever he meant, it's a very sad thought.

Mrs. PG and I heard this this morning and she remarked how much she'd enjoyed it. 'Lots of bassonery' was her take. I must have a recording somewhere.

Jonathan Swain seems to be greatly undervalued by the BBC. He was bumped off the old Record Review, then banished to TTN after they scrapped CD Masters and now ....

Does Mrs PG know that in the last chord the poor bassoon has to play a note that is below the range of the instrument? It succeeds (usually), but watching how is always fun in a live performance

I too heard the Nielsen, a piece new to me, and was struck by the rather valedictory, if not actually melancholy, tone struck by JS's selections if only in the first part of the programme. Echo all the above.

If you enjoyed the Nielsen, you might like to have a look at Naxos CD 8.553050. In addition to the Nielsen, it includes wind quintets by John Fernstrom and Johan Kvandal. Nice performances by the Oslo Wind Ensemble.
