    Too much Jazz!

Jazz on Radio 3 has now become a regular part of Breakfast on 3 and this year's Proms have gone overboard with regard to jazz and popular music.
You wouldn't find Mozart or Beethoven on Radio 1 or 2 so is it just Radio 3 trying to be "hip" yet again? The televised Proms this year have also
pandered to Jazz and Popular Music, in fact I think only half the concerts shown thus far have included classical repertoire. And please don't call
me a musical snob, I enjoy Jazz, Broadway shows and Pop/Rock music................but NOT on the UK's only real classical music station.

And the UK's only national Jazz music station available on FM radio!*

Leave it where it is, I for one am enjoying it.

    OG

    * I am aware of the existence of Jazz FM on digital radio but a) cannot receive a DAB radio signal b) am led to believe by those in the know that there is a limited amount of Jazz broadcast thereon

      ......mmmmm...

Radio 3 broadcasts 24 hours a day. During the Proms season, all proms concerts are broadcast. Everything is available on iPlayer for 30 days after broadcast. imv, the vast majority of R3 programmes consist of classical music. I count myself as a regular Radio 3 listener, but I have never been able to listen to more than a small fraction of Radio 3's output.

Are you such an avid listener to Radio 3, and such a fan of classical music, that Jazz., world music programmes are preventing you from getting your desired quota of Classical music? Otherwise, your comment seems to me a knee-jerk reaction.

And then there is the small matter of Radio 3's charter.

Jazz has always been a feature of Radio 3 programming, which isn't really the case with Radio 1 and Radio 2. Or is this just a windup?

Well, compared to non-jazz free improvisation, I suppose it might be argued that there is too much jazz on Radio 3. There again, perhaps there is not enough jazz to fill Radio 3's jazz slots. Why else would a Jazz on 3 programme a few years ago have comprised non-jazz pianist John Tilbury performing a work by Samuel Beckett?

Please let us not confuse Jazz or Popular Music with Pop Music.

Ivor Novello, Eric Coates, Gordan Jacob et al wrote popular music (yes, and Edward Elgar too!)

Pop music, the Charts, boybands are destroying the appreciation of our young of [I]Good[/I/] music - whether it be by orchestra, brass band or cinema organ.

Where on radio will you find such popular and listenable programms as "Housewive's Choice" - "The Organist Entertains" - "Listen to the Band" - "These you have loved" - "Desert Island Disks" ?

The nearest you can get to popular music on radio can only be found on Classic FM if you can withstand the commercials and the infantile chatter.on radio.

I didn't realise we still lived in the 1980's?

I rarely meet any youngsters who take any notice of "the Charts" anymore
Pop music is in great health

An obvious typo, which I have now corrected.

The total absence on BBC Radio of the sort of light music to which I was referring is a fact - not an opinion.

The BBC Concert orchestra (founded in the pre war years as "The BBC Theatre Orchestra) Was renamed post war as "The BBC Opera Orchestra (under Stanford Robinson - I remember playing with them on a series concerning the music of Franz Lehar) and the orchestra's name was changed again to BBC Concert Orchestra under Sydney Torch.
Mainly known by the listeners for Friday Night is Music Night, but a lot of its work was (and still is) devoted to playing background music for Wild Life programmes and documentaries.

... and very good they are, too.

So I gave you facts about the dirth of popular Light Music on BBC Radio..

Of course, you are free to express your Opinions .... as am I

Call me a musical snob, please, because I'm uninterested in jazz, pop/rock and Broadway shows; but I would point out that Radio 3 is not, and never has been, exclusively a 'classical music station' (nor was the Third Programme before that). Jazz has been broadcast regularly since 1964 and features in the station's official remit. I see selective pop/rock as part of the ever-evolving remits of Radio 3 and the Proms. Jazz no problem.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Sadly I see the Radio 3 burgeoning policy of broadening the appeal as wanting to be all things to all men.

If you have a chance (or find yourself in the situation) to listen to Radio 2 from 7.00 am to 9.00pm, you’ll realise how much we, Radio3 listeners are missing.

Yes, but the OP has a point; mixing genres in the same programme doesn't work. It hacks off the classical lovers and smacks of tokenism to jazz fans.

And what self respecting jazz aficionado is up at 7am anyway?

Well, yours is the only posting that is a true reply, as opposed to someone telling me I don't know what i'm talking about
or that I confuse Pop with Popular, etc.etc.etc. So thanks..........I know we're probably in the minority here!

So, for you, what you say is so obviously correct that only those that agree with you are giving "true replies"?

But, by describing R3 as the UK's only real classical music station you do rather suggest that "you don't know what you're talking about". As Richard Barrett commented in his (non-true? "untrue"??) post #4, Jazz has always been featured on R3, as it was from 1964 on the Third Programme (as frenchie mentioned in her #9 - of which you also question the "truth").
