In terms of an individual discovering,or being confronted with music that is very different to what they currently listen to , this is something of a two edged sword.Unfortunately for core rep classical, the fact is that there is so much more out there to find, that the path from pop to rock to classical or Jazz, just as one example,is now replaced by whole network of almost never ending paths, that may never really get close to the classical garden. And of course there is the opportunity to delve ever deeper ,almost endlessly, into a specific genre, which is pretty unhelpful in terms of developing ones tastes more widely.
Yes. I was not agreeing with the devastating demolition of pop music, boy bands and what not. But the sheer quantity of music - of various kinds, and of course not all meritless - means that 'core classical', which is what a majority of classical music lovers think of as 'classical music' is much less likely to be discovered, and more importantly pursued, by younger listeners. Will they become 'classical fans' or 'jazz fans'? If not, does that matter?

What 'they hear on Radio 3' is negligible as they aren't listening to Radio 3. Judging from the George Lamb saga a few years back (which I followed closely on the dedicated BBC messageboard thread at the time), the 'music snobs' listened to 6 Music.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

..a station that seems to follow a pattern ( EG Radio 2) of very bland daytime programming, with the more interesting programming consigned to evening and late night slots.

If I was a music snob, I wouldn't advertise the fact that I listened to a lot of Daytime 6 music.....
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I put it in quotes, with tongue in cheek, because that was what the George Lamb fans who listened to him on 6 Music called the music fans who said he was totally unsuitable for 6 Music.
