Sullivan's incidental music to Shakespeare's Henry VIII was played on Breakfast this morning. Whilst I'm not at all snooty about G&S (trod the boards on occasion) nor about Sullivan's music, this particular bit of rumty tumty tum was unbelievably banal. One could not help but conjure a picture of Anne Boleyn, head tucked under arm, cutting a caper and singing a jolly madrigal with the Lord High Executioner.
Perhaps some workaday oeuvres of lesser composers are best left undisturbed.
