I don’t know. I imagine most people would like to know something about the paintings when they visit a gallery and would feel short changed if they couldn’t have the information because they don’t own the gadget.

I suppose I just have to accept that radio broadcast is now multimedia and we are assumed to be equipped and prepared to go online if we want to receive programmes in full.

Unhelpful as I realise it is in context, I mut admit that the art gallery analogy cannot help but remind me of a certain pianist/composer's descripton - or rather re-entitlement - of a famous piano work as Exhibitionists at the Pictures...

As you were - my coat is on and all that...

I don't get the impression that everything will be changed for ever. Drama on 3 at 9pm, and Early Music Late with Simon Heighes from the Pyrenees Festival of Early Music.

And Breakfast, no doubt, as usual, on Monday morning.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

i quite like the idea of a stream of music which I have no idea what it is, who composed it, how old it is, where it comes from
just the acousmatic experience without the babble of text or words

Not that this is likely to be like that though

I get the impression that everything is beginning to change but I hope it will be sometime before I am pushed into it.

I may not complain if Breakfast moves to online

I don’t classify titles and composers’ names as words let alone as text. I like to know what I am listening to, as I don’t listen to music as an acoustic experience whatever that may be.

Probably not the place to discuss this methinks

              Though a possible "answer" is

What am I listening to? : Music
What is an "acoustic experience"? : Music (amongst other things)

              is worth a read

I see this as another debate, like Cabaret on BaL, that simply ends up as losing any sort of perspective. And like the short 'New Year, New Music' ('can't stand the stuff, I've never switched off so often. Is this what Radio 3 has become?')

Yes, some people will want their Sunday Breakfast with Martin Handley or whoever, followed by Sunday Morning with Rob or Jonathan, then Private Passions - the usual 'Playlist programmes'. And so on through the day until Through the Night.

This is going to be a musical sequence which follows the development of the Third Programme and Radio 3. The major point is NOT just 'playing some interesting classical music'. It is the illustrative interest of the evolving sequence***, NOT the individual pieces qua music. If you'd rather have your own version of 'listener's requests' - where you are the listener requesting - without even sampling how this will work, that is your choice.

People who don't use the internet, or smartphones (like me), are quite used to missing out on what expanding technology now offers. If you do have it, but don't want to be online all day - use it intelligently to fix the point in the day's sequence if you dip in. It starts at 9am and ends at 9pm.

                *** That's how I interpret the description.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

They could, of course, have a day of broadcasting programmes from Radio 3/Third/Music Programmes exactly as they were, with the original introductions. That would be interesting. We could then compare and contrast. . .

This latest gimmick (effectively requiring a computer as well as a radio of some kind) falls at the first hurdle. There is no playlist whatsoever. (And it's less than 24 hours away.)

                    Classical Muzak?

As the short-term participant here, Newtonality put it, "just listen". Anyway, I feel pretty sure a rolling playlist will appear as the sequence progresses.

What, for 12 hours? I don't think so. I do have a life.

It may be great, but I don't gamble.

I'm sorry, but this type of pathetic secrecy really isn't good enough. It's all-day Breakfast without the interruptions. Radio 1/2 format but with Radio 3 music, but without the interruptions.

THIS is how much they are prepared to tell us - i.e. nothing:-

Of course, the music may well be great, but what is wrong with announcing the title and composer and then playing it?

Nan, the pathetic secrecy was last night, after the interval.

… because that makes you listen to the music with preconceived ideas, and besides, it’s much more exciting to be engaged in multimedia…. (add an emoticon of your choice)
