    .

... it appears they are a dying breed -

Some blame Britain's most notorious Gary, paedophile pop star Glitter, pictured, who was jailed for 16 years string of historic sex attacks on young girls, for the once-popular name's fall from grace.

In this matter (as in so many others) I've been wrong for most of my life. There was a 'Gary' at my infant school - but in his case it was an abbreviated form of his actual name, Gabriel. I had therefore assumed (for the next sixty years... ) that all Garys were in fact Gabriels. I now learn that it's a name in its own right -

(from which I learn that Gary Cooper was really a marmalade).

By gum! That's a good 'un!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Yes, I have a colleague called Gary and he also said it was a much less popular name these days.
                Best regards,
                Jonathan

I saw the great Gary Graffman in 1972, playing the Rachmaninov Rhapsody. There's a classical guitarist/composer/teacher called Gary Ryan, only the fourth guitarist to be made FRCM (after Segovia, Bream and Williams), whose best-known composition is called Birds Flew over the Spire.
