Dvorak is definitely having a good year number wise. As we are nearly at the half-year point, it looks like in terms of works/extracts that if the trend continues he will be up about 10-15% on last year. The Slavonic Dances currently make up around 20% of Dvorak broadcast and combined with other commonly occuring short works like the Prague Waltzes a considerable amount of the Dvorak broadcast is of his 'lighter' side.

Now I may have been mistaken but as I pottered in and out this afternoon I thought I heard the VERY familiar strains of Ravel's Mother Goose Suite. AND if I'm not much mistaken that same Suite was on Suzy Klein's Sunday morning progamme just 24 hours before.
Always good to hear La Mer - must be all of a few days since its last outing.

We seem to have had a respite from the Academic Festival Overture in recent weeks. Much though I love Brahms, I'd got to the point where I reached for the off button every time it was announced. Give it a couple of months and I might even be able to stand listening to it again.

may I ask the data-collector how many times the Schubert Impromptus get played? - they always have me diving for the off switch, I would much rather have a bleeding chunk from a piano sonata.

I will get back to you on that one this evening when I get home mercia, as the data is on my memory stick, the Schubert Impromptus are among my monitored works so I can give you a figure on that.

Performance on 3 had a thing about repeatedly playing Pictures at an Exhibition a while back!

Now it seems to be all early church choral music and Richard Strauss.

The current figure for Schubert Impromptus is 21, actually a little bit down on the 60 odd we had last year. I made an error with Mother Goose, it should be 11!

thanks for that info. suffolk. Is it possible that even more impromptus (or whatever) slip past your radar because they never appear on playlists or do I take that as understood? (you're surely not listening 24-hours a day )

There would only be a small chance that things could slip under my radar, I use I-player to find the pieces that aren't listed in the schedules, normally after the end of the concerts, which means of course I skip through the concert to the appropriate places. It is impossible to catch absolutely everything, but I think I get around 96-98% of what's broadcast during a year. Of course it is also very difficult to keep tabs on the exact broadcast numbers of every single work by every composer (that would probably be a full-time job!), so I only monitor a certain proportion of works and make notes of any new pieces that are suddenly becoming popular with R3 and rely on my rather good memory for these sort of things. But I do try and note every work/extract by every composer to give the overall figures for each composer as accurately as I can. I usually spend 1-2 hours each day going through the previous day's broadcasts.

Light music as composer of the week and a simultaneous broadcast with Radio 2 on Friday evening.

No wonder people accuse Radio3 of dumbing down.

This is the Radio 2 programme, Friday Night Is Music Night, being transmitted also on Radio 3, rather than a Radio 3 programme sending a bit of a rocket over to Radio 2. Why? It's on Radio 2 every week of the year - if anyone wants to listen to it (or has ever wanted to listen to it at any time) they can hear it over there.
