But most of the time the R3 presenters most certainly do NOT explain shapes, means, but gush the 'warm' cliches.
Just listen to what Sarah Walker and Rob Cowan actually say to intro pieces - one gush after another.

I think we must be listening to different programmes within R3. I never listen to Rob Cowan and Sarah Walker for the reasons mentioned.

However I am currently listening again to the first instalment of Telemann COTW, and Donald McLeod is always very informative - hence educative - hence music more enjoyable.

All the specialist presenters are experts in their respective field - e.g. Robert Worby, the early music presenters (Simon Heighes), Kathryn Tickell, Verity Sharp, Alyn Shipton....

CotW is (or used to be) designated a 'music documentary' - a speech-based music programme. It's supposed to be 'about' music as much as just playing it.

This is explains your previous comment! Most programmes that are presenter-led music programmes fall into the category of 'new listeners'' programmes, seemingly, including the prime listening slots (the mornings). The best solution until this improves is yours - don't listen.

Ah, good plan, but what if there has been a particularly lively game/dodgy ref on the saturday, and his voice is suffering? It can happen. Safest to stick with Saturday mornings for ER , I think.

Anyway, I ( very ) occasionally check the twitter feed for radio presenters, and if they are full of drivel, I tend not to listen to their broadcasts.

Paulie55 referred above to Elizabeth Alker (broadcasting on Sunday Breakfast) and described her voice as colourless and unsuited to radio. I think that was an extremely restrained observation. My wife refuses to have the radio on when she is broadcasting.

Slightly off topic, sorry - Lucie Skeaping used to do the musical introductions to the plays we did at middle school (not in person, they were on cassette!) so when I got to know about her early music credentials, I was rather surprised and impressed!

Hannah French and Kate Molleson

I’m listening to the Telemann CD set slot on today’s Record Review. I think Hannah French has become an excellent early music presenter. She has lost that stiff lecturery speaking manner. Now her knowledge and enthusiasm pouring out and she has rather nice ways of pointing out shortcomings of performance. Another discovery for me is Kate Molleson. Her interview with Mark-Anthony Turnage in the interval on Monday’s Prom was focused and well researched. I hope we’ll hear a lot more of her presentations.

Haven't been listening today, so don't know I'm afraid. I was, however, surprised on a trip to the deep South the other day to hear the dulcet tones of Al Ryan (erstwhile Jazz Now presenter and sometime afternoon R4 continuity person) delivering the BBC Oxford traffic news! I guess we are in the era of the gig economy.

I caught a name Mark Forrest after yesterday’s Essay (it might have been between Music Matters and Essay). He sounded slightly more casual (an import from local station) than the regulars we are used to but nothing to make me turn the radio off. Is this the same presenter you heard?
