I'm sure many people do find RP irritating.
Incidentally, having been born and lived in Cornwall for most of my life (so far) I have a noticable Cornish accent which, when I hear myself on radio, I find irritating too!
I think what may have turned me against regional accents is that, whilst some are considered acceptable, others are thought to indicate a reduced intelligence.
I well remember, when I left school and travelled to the Midlands to study, one of my fellow students with a pronounced Rochdale accent muttering "ooh arr pasty" every time I spoke.
