I'm sure many people do find RP irritating.
Incidentally, having been born and lived in Cornwall for most of my life (so far) I have a noticable Cornish accent which, when I hear myself on radio, I find irritating too!
I think what may have turned me against regional accents is that, whilst some are considered acceptable, others are thought to indicate a reduced intelligence.
I well remember, when I left school and travelled to the Midlands to study, one of my fellow students with a pronounced Rochdale accent muttering "ooh arr pasty" every time I spoke.
I have a medical condition- I am fool intolerant.

You don't have to go along with what other folk say you know.

This was the problem I had with Stephanie McGovern's NE (Middlesbrough) accent. She spoke about a new law, or so I thought. Turned out she was saying 'a new low'. No wonder what she said didn't make sense to me.

The right letters but not necessarily in the right order.

              I rarely do, it seems.

What is sad is that the Cornish accents are heard less particularly amongst young people who are more likely to have estuary than RP. Maybe too many incomers in the county and the influences of Aussie soaps.

On BBC1 Look North (NE & Cumbria) the presenters speak in clear English that everyone can understand. They aren't trying to prove a point.

Excuse me asking OT but did S-A's school do the whole "Magic Flute" or the bite-size version by J. Michael Dyack (spelling?) in which, in my own school's production, I was a priest (with curtain rings as ear-decoration) and also Monostatos ??

A new law, in strong Middlesbrough speak, would be nearer to "a new lah" - as in various parts of Yorkshire, Cumbria and Lancs. My mother hailed from that neck of the woods.

Just a suggestion; how about the announcers just speaking latin while dress in wing collar and top hat !!! with of course the female presenters only wearing a Norman Hartnell evening gown even for the morning programme. Personally I thought ethnic cleansing would have been best left to johnny foreigner. I don't suppose I could interest any of you lot in membership of the Wilfred Pickles appreciation society !!

Shouldn't that be chain male and chained female? And the wireless wasn't around at the time of the Roman and Norman occupations.

Like yourself, I'm only "joking", of course.

Talking of whom his narration of Peter and the Wolf is in my recently acquired Markevitch ICON box - I'll have a listen to his dulcets!
