How about "Less unwind, more undead. Perhaps it’s because Unwind is labelled as a 24/7 streaming service rather than an actual radio station. I listened to Edith Bowman’s weekday late afternoon show, Cinematic Soundtracks. She’s a movie-score expert, having interviewed umpteen composers and directors for her film and music podcast Soundtracking, so why is she reduced to a couple of sentences between tinkly piano tracks? Jonathan Ross, who hosts Classic FM’s film show on Friday and Saturday evenings, isn’t so muted; neither was Mark Kermode when he hosted a similar show on Scala. It seems daft to employ such a specialist host and then ask her to dampen down her enthusiasm and knowledge."

Musical expert employed to avoid talking about music and witter aimiably/laughingly about nothing in particular. Very Radio 3.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Sam Jackson puts the case for the defence in the first half of yesterday's 'Feedback' on Radio 4 - each of us will probably have a view on how convincing he was (or wasn't).

Yes, it is almost as if the BBC i trying to close down R3and insert mere disk-to-disk chains - no analysis, no evaluation, no reliance on listeners to help develop, just strnig of tracks with nowt else.

Gulp - the end of R3 as an entity, and a surrender to a series of anonymised playlists.

If I understood him correctly, people will turn to Unwind after the Today programme ('to escape the news'), move on from Unwind to Radio 3 (why?) , switch back to Unwind if something on Radio 3 doesn't appeal to them, nod off while listening to Unwind, then return to Radio 4 for the Today programme the following morning.

Ooh I think it’s the greatest of all funeral marches and indeed one of the greatest slow movements ever written precisely because it’s not a funeral March but more of an exploration of a response to death and remembered life,

Maybe Barbs was talking about that particular performance?

Sorry I was referring to the Chailly recording - the rest of the performance is very good .

I think Erich Kleiber's VPO 1955 performance meets your test magnificently.

No I should apologise ..didn’t make the connection. I should have realised you would never say such a thing !

Yes Kleiber supreme in this ..

a propos of nothing in partIcular I was listening blind to the Elgar Introduction and Allegro on In Tune tonight and thought this is good - some of that string playing is up there with the Barbirolli.

Right (namesake) band : Sinfonia of London

Wrong conductor - turned out to be John Wilson - now that did surprise me.

I cannot disagree with regard to the quality of the playing. Its the guiding hand I struggle with .

I was in Suffolk in the summer and with only a radio. On Breakfast it was announced the Tallis Fantasia with the S of L - oh good I thought but of course it was Wilson not Barbirolli , superbly played and moved me not a jot.

Actually , those of you who listen to Breakfast and EC can enlighten me - how often if ever do "golden oldie" recordings like the S of L/Barbirolli appear ?

Andrew's extensive database might be able to help. (But I'm not sure how to specifically find Barbirolli).

I don't really listen to Breakfast or EC, but I couldn't find many recent ones, although a decade ago they may have appeared more often...

A quick search found this partial list:

From my limited listening to 'Breakfast' I would say that it's pretty rare to hear a 'classic' recording unless they're marking an anniversary or birthday of a conductor or other artist.
