Beethoven: Symphony No.9 'Choral'
Lucy Crowe (soprano)
Jennifer Johnston (mezzo-soprano)
Joshua Stewart (tenor)
Jonathan Lemalu (baritone)
CBSO Chorus
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
Kazuki Yamada (conductor)
I turned this on without knowing what to expect. On hearing the xth Choral of 2024 I swore, "Not another one" but on hearing the Scherzo andTrio beautifully manicured by Kazuki Yamada, content replaced contempt.
Such a contrast with the shaggy crew cut staccatissimo version led by Nicholas Collon at the Proms
Don't get me wrong, I iked both performances and that shows why I'm an avid R.3 listener and not a person who refines his choices until only one CD will suffice.
A strong set of soloists offers more to come but a fish pie is piping hot and indicating "Ready Eddy."
