    Radio 3 announcers (network presenters)

Interestingly this Random Radio Jottings article from over a decade ago suggests Radio 3 removed all its announcers in mid the '90s: https://andywalmsley.blogspot.com/20...ncers.html?m=1

However, it is fair to say a fair amount of the R3 schedule is still linked by announcers - both live and pre-recorded, depending on the time of day. This includes evenings and also weekend afternoons. Does this mean the announcer is back but under the new guise of "network presenter"? To me they are still more announcers rather than presenter in terms of style, although they do often introduce themselves by name rather than being completely anonymous.

Was there a period between the mid-'90s and now during which there were no announcers? Or have the announcers always been around, albeit in varying quantities?

In terms of who I have heard linking the programmes (and recording trails) recently, this list includes:

    Male:
    John Shea
    Al Ryan
    Chris Barrow

    Female:
    Jane Royce
    Danielle Jaloweicka
    Ali Jones
    Penny Gore
    Emily Jeffrey

From these lists, both John Shea and Danielle Jaloweicka also are named presenters of Through the Night.

    Any I've missed?

The excellent Fiona Talkington and equally, Paul Guinery seem to be missing - I can tell you which ones I wish were missing if you like!

    Edit. Susan Sharp, another favourite.

Paul Gunnery is a Breakfast newsreader and does not provide any continuity / network presenting. The article I linked to in my first post indicates that he used to do the latter, but these days he only reads the news (on average on day per week).

I thought Fiona Talkington was a named personality presenter, complete with her own picture on the website/Sounds for the programmes she presents? As for Susan Sharp, I think she no longer works for R3?

I have not heard of Fiona Talkington and Susan Sharp, I think they no longer work for R3.
There are several others missing off that list*, but that's not surprising given the age of the article. Life circumstances, anno domini, and career decisions have an effect over that kind of period on the original cohort, and others are taken on.

*Off the top of my head, Martin Handley, Hannah French, Tom McKinney, Ian Skelly.

I think whom you're listing there are all named 'personality' presenters rather than continuity announcers. The confusion has perhaps come from the fact R3 choose to call their announcers "network presenters".

Weekday daytime programming is simply linked by the named personality presenters such as Georgia Mann, Tom McKinney and Sean Raffertey handing over to one another, rather than requiring a separate announcer for the junctions.

Catriona Young, who like Penny Gore over the years has been an all rounder including presenter , continuity and news reading.

Yes, Catriona Young was still reading the news around 10 years ago, and then more recently has been a Through the Night presenter, among other things. Penny Gore seems to have become an announcer (network presenter) since the schedule changes came into effect in April, presumably because her weekday afternoon programme was scrapped?

Indeed, Paul was put to good use during the pandemic to play the piano on Breakfast, during a period when distinct summaries for R3 had been cut in favour of opting into the R2/5L summary at 8am only.

I think Penny Gore also does the Satnav directions on our car's machine.

Paul Gunnery (sic) is drafted in when it's felt a Big Gun is needed.

Another excellent presenter I recall was Louise Fryer, who seemed to work in tandem with Penny Gore presenting the weekend editions of Morning On 3 (before it became 3Breakfast) and also Performance On Three and Through The Night. I believe she suffered some health issues at some time, which would account for her sudden departure; although I can't recall Radio 3 ever alluding to this or wishing her a good recovery ...

                          She rose to higher things!

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I seem to recall a couple of excellent R3 presenters hosted the Emirates Airlines (I think) classical music radio 'programme' on their flights some years ago. I think (lots of thinks here) that Louise Fryer may have been one of the hosts, and the name of the male presenter may have been Chris de Souza.- There are some excellent R3 radio voices, of which these two were up there.
