    BBC Music Day

This has been mentioned on the Essential Classics thread but I am wondering if anybody can make sense of it. I can’t. It looks utterly senseless to me. I wonder if Alan Davey was consulted at all. Thank God TTN has been spared.

    […]
    BBC Music Night
    20:00-22:00 BBC Radio 3
BBC Music Day culminates in a live gala concert from City Halls in Glasgow presented by Katie Derham and Ken Bruce, which is simulcast on Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio Scotland and the Asian Network. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is joined by an exciting cross-genre line-up of artists including tenor Noah Stewart, the violinist Jack Liebeck, pop legends Lulu and Deacon Blue, Bhangra artist Jaz Dhami, Scots folk star Claire Hastings, harpist Catrin Finch and jazz pianist Jamie Cullum. They perform music with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Richard Balcombe, from classical repertoire to film music, jazz to rock and folk music to Jaz Dhami.

As I said in the other thread this looks to me like a very dumbed down and cut down attempt at a re-invention of what was done in "Music Live" in 2000. Very poor fare compared with what was offered then.

Seems a bit rough inflicting all this on the Asian listenership.

Can't wait: Derham and Bruce? What's not to like?
              OK, start your list here.

Ken Bruce is a consummate broadcaster who knows exactly what his R2 audience wants and presents this in a seemingly-spontaneous, relaxed, and cheerful manner - exactly as they require it.

Sadly ... well, let's be charitable to his colleague for the day and stop there.

What is one recommended to do in order to be charitable to her?

I (or FoR3 on that occasion) asked on the R3 Facebook page whether it would be possible to have 2hrs 33 secs of silence instead. No one replied (AD is on leave at present btw).

My guess is that this is the idea of the Radio 2 Controller, Bob Shennan, in his capacity as BBC Director of Music, charged with coordinating 'music' broadcasts on radio and television. It could be an attempt to get round the BBC Trust's requirement* that other services, with bigger audiences than Radio 3, should also help to 'deliver the great works of classical music' to ALL audiences. Instead of which they're delivering emetic music broadcasts to Radio 3.

                    * We note, however, that it is not the sole responsibility of Radio 3 to deliver the great works of classical music and other musical genres to all audiences. The BBC has an overall responsibility for this and there are many services with a role to play in achieving this ambition [...]
We have asked BBC management to consider how the BBC can best deliver classical, jazz and world music to as many licence fee payers as possible, and how Radio 3 should contribute to this overall ambition. [Feb 2011]

                    ****

The scale and appeal of many BBC services are much greater than those of Radio 3, particularly amongst certain demographic groups, and may therefore be effective in complementing Radio 3’s delivery of this content. We believe that a coordinated approach can make more impact and note the success that the BBC has had with its poetry and opera seasons. In addition, a number of organisations felt that Radio 3 could more effectively reach these audiences when working in conjunction with other BBC services.

To help promote classical music across the BBC portfolio, BBC management has recently established a classical music board

This is chaired by the Controller of Radio 3 and has responsibility for developing and creating cross-platform ideas that will promote this programming across the BBC. [Unfortunately, this appears to have been abolished without anyone notiicing]

Could someone point out to Bob Shennan that the requirement is not fulfilled by broadcasting an orchestration of 'God Only Knows', 'My Fair Lady Overture', 'The Hipsters' or Lulu performing 'Where the Poor Boys Dance' ON RADIO 3.

Is the BBC really run by lunatics or what?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

At least they're not playing them backwards. Or maybe they are?!

I did say on their Facebook page that there was a bit of 'run-of-the-mill' classical music (apart from the Candide Overture, that is - a Breakfast favourite) but that they would probably play it backwards. For info:

Programme includes (hence on Radio 3):

Overture Candide (Leonard Bernstein) - BBC SSO

Violin Concerto (3rd movement) Mendelssohn:- Jack Liebeck (violin) No 57 CFM Hallof Fame 2015
Procession Of The Nobles (Rimsky Korsakov) – BBC SSO
Recondita Armonia (Puccini) - Noah Stewart (tenor)
Meditation (Thais) - Jack Liebeck (violin) No 103 CFM Hallof Fame 2015

                        BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
                        Richard Balcombe (conductor)

Presenter/Katie Derham and Ken Bruce, Producer/Anthony Cherry for the BBC

The Asian Network isn't broadcasting "all this" - just Jaz Dhami's performance.

As for the "Asian listenership", some Asian listeners listen to Radio 3 and some non-Asian listeners listen to the Asian Network.

So, in one cleverly worded gesture, BBC Management drives more R3 listeners to access the internet classical music station of their choice, thus reducing listener numbers to R3 even more, and helping them to discover hitherto unsuspected riches elsewhere.

                            You couldn't make it up.

And on BBC Music Day, BBC Four is also joining in, albeit not (apparently) with the 'Music Day' tag attached:

7.35pm-8: Sounds of the Eighties (UB40, Public Enemy, the Beat &c)
8-9: Gershwin's Summertime (story of the song)
9-10.30 The Old Grey Whistle Test (70s Gold - Elton John, David Bowie, Captain Beefheart)
                              10.30-11.30: I'm a Popstar
11.30-12.30am: Top of the Pops - 1980 Big Hits.

Something for everyone … meanwhile, on Radio 3 we have Radio 2 …
